Squeal and smoke

Alright. I know it has been a while. But I finally had some time to change the fluids. The fluids I. The front differential were gray and nasty. The rear weren't too bad. And the gear box had about a smidgen of oil in it. Everything is oiled up and greased up. The belts were loosened and nothing wrong with the alternator or water pump. My concern is the loose front drive shaft. It is making noise when shaking by where it goes in. The UJ aren't the cause. It's literally where it goes in to the diff and front of the gear box. What's the cause? Also have a whining noise in the front when driving. Not sure if it's from the tires or differential. Please help me out.

Sounds like the front diff might be worn.
Are you sure the sliding joint in the front propshaft is sliding, and greased?
Tyre noise is often hard to tell from mechanical noise, what sort of tyres do you have?

Yes greased. Or so I think it is. Because it started coming out of the nipple. Now the front prop shaft moving.

I get side to side motion when rotated. A lot of movement. Back prop shaft I get none.

By side to side movement - do you mean radial ? - I.E. across the axis of the output shaft ? It's worth checking that the nut which holds the output flange on the output shaft it tight.... if not - fit a new nyloc nut ASAP, before it causes other problems. It might also be the output shaft support bearing. It's hard to see from your picture, but it half looks like there was a lot of dusty oily residue which you have scraped of... ? how much oil was there in the transfer box ?

I would like to send you the video if you were ok with that. I have been trying to post it but it's not allowing. When I turn it, it seems loose and I can feel it also when I drive. Jerking. I thought it was the u joints but they are sturdy. There was and still is dirt and oil that I'm slowly cleaning off. The box little had a couple drips. Extremely low.

If the bearing in the diff nose is really slack, and a lot of oil leaking from the diff, you will need to rebuild the diff, or get another.

If the box leaks a lot of oil, top it up with the right oil from time to time.

I think the easiest way to post video to here is to upload it to the tube of you, and then link to it on here - but I have never done it - i doubt you'd be able to email it to me, as it will be too large - so the other way is to dropbox it, and post the details on here - either PM or open forum :)

If the output flange (on the TB ) seems loose, then have a look at that ASAP - that could get a bit iffy in short order :eek:

Might be worth dropping the new oil out of the TB into a spotlessly clean container, and having a nosy for any metal fragments. If the oil is clean, then put it back and count your blessings. It does sound as though you might have to do a few seals :(. If it were mine, I'd do the front seal, as its not a bad job - easier than the rear output seal anyway - and I have one of those to do, which I can't be arsed with :D:rolleyes::eek:

Probably the seals 'tween the swivels ( and their one shot grease ), and the rest of the axle ( and the EP90 within ) have gone - almost normal :( :rolleyes: - and not a bad job - tedious, but there you go - it's a LR after all !

The diff isn't leaking. Diff seems fine. Maybe the flange?
