My front spots have been fitted for a year or so and are activated on full beam. They are wired directly into the battery but use a relay on the full beam. This morning I had my lights off but flashed a guy to tell him to pull out of a side turning and I noticed that my spots remained on. In fact they are on without the headlights or full beam, they are just on by themselves and when I turn the engine off they are still on! I have disconnected them to stop the battery draining.

Does this sound like a failed relay? What else could it be?

Could be a dodgy earth too. Remember the relay is just a remote switch. It turns on when it gets told too and turns off when it gets told too.

If you have a dodgy earth then it might well get the signal to turn on, but never the one to turn off.

not really, there is no "signal" to turn off, a normal, bog standard relay, you apply 12V, it energises and switches the load on, you remove 12V, it de engergises, and switches the load off.

Relays can get "sticky" over time if the solenoid bar gets muck into it, or becomes slightly magnetic itself over time

dodgy earth can cause it too, as it takes less power to hold it on than it does to energise it (switch it on) but there aint no "signal"

Yeah signal is the wrong word I agree.

We had a similar issue with my brother 90 the other week. New relay and spots, but dodgy earth on one headlight. Which resulted in the dip beam trying to earth through the main beam wiring and you couldn't switch the spots off.
