By the way forgot this bit.....

If anyone is look into the water bottle and sensor as a project to do google the part numbers but delete the "P" Quickco said the P isn't required. I've just tried and by gum they are right, loads of options come up!

Looks like Brown & Gammon are overall the cheapest I could find.

£16.56 for sensor, £34.86 for Tank, plus delivery which isn't bad from these guys. Should have put this on my order placed with them a few days ago "bugger".

Going to collect remaining parts from Car shop (filters/oil etc) but was wondering your thoughts on Spark Plugs, I'm removed NGK Plat's from mine, and was wondering if I should stick the same back in? I've done a search for my model and Champion EON 1 come out as being the ones to stick in, any views guys?

If i remember rightly i used chamions the last time i changed my plugs, taking out NGK's. No problems with the champions so far.

interesting thread, i'm keeping a close eye on how you're getting on.

Well I bought the NGK Plat's as I was in the shop! The Champion EON1's seem to be OK might try them next service plus they're a £10 cheaper which always helps!!

But these NGK have been good for the cold starts up here in the North East so I've opt to keep the same ones, for now!

I'm charging the batteries for the Camera and I will take some pic's of the Bottom End, sump, Parts before fitting, during and after.

Weather is dry and bloody cold for tomorrow..... nowt new then!!

Just posting update for today, Was going to start with engine guard was fun, once I'd figured out how to remove but the weather made hard work today, water was frozen in bottom end/my hose pipe and tap, took what seemed like hours to sort out (hose is all packed away "correctly" ready for tomorrow) engine all washed down and bled no oil/crap left anywhere (removed pipes and cleaned if required).

Removed the sump guard, cleaned that down ready for tomorrow morning.

Have another issue "my pressure washer" makes the right noise but no pressure! Great!! Something else to buy! Slowed me cleaning the gunk off not great with normal pressure from a tap.

Removed and Tested thermostat that works fine.

Grabbing new pressure washer tomorrow morning then can finish cleaning the drive as it's a bit of a mess and finish cleaning engine guard.

Once that's sorted I can get under the beast and fit the new oil rail ladder and get the timing belt on.

I've been taking pictures of the little work I've done but I would say tomorrow will be the better day, prep all done so it's assemble time!!

It's done!

And so I'm I.

Will sort pictures out soon, I'm off to bed "bloody knackered" changing the head gasket is the easy bit, the ladder takes some work as well protected by a few hard to get to bolts but glad it's all finished now.

Great thread and glad you are nearly there with it. My 2001 1.8 has done 97k miles now and still going strong. It has the thermostat mod but no idea on head gasket (Standard or MSL) and I'd rather not find out of course! will be interested to hear how yours runs etc. I never drive straight off from cold - always give the engine a few minutes, always have with cars and bikes. Not sure this makes a blind bit of difference but will continue to do so. My other half has a VW oil burner. 2 years old now and on its second ecu and range of other issues. no point to this other than they all go wrong! even German cars.

If your's is the 2001, then you've got the old Oil rail ladder and Gasket..... Sorry!!

The ladder would be straight forward if not for the brace that sits over one of the sump bolts.... thats the bugger.

But 97k is good going, have you had any problems? I'm going to warm her up first and will check air in waterpipes for a period just to see if anything is getting trapped as I've read about that on here.

Right new Timing belt fitted tonight, so just the head to be put back on and flush the system...... Finish is almost in sight!

This job would be much better if you had a day or three spare!

Glad you're nearly sorted. I've been reading bits & pieces of this thread for a while now & have probably missed it but what did you do to reseal your liners after mistakenly turning over the engine without clamping them down while the head was off?
Hope your car is sorted now & gives you reasonable service.

Nothing!
You must have missed this gem.....

Freelance, No I would say stopped just in time, head is being tested today and should have back tomorrow, then I'll know if it just the head or small end. Pistons/Liners etc should be OK nothing much done to them as yet, hanging until head info is known. Sudden loss of water could be gasket/head/hose/therm.......... but until the heads back who knows. I'll update it again tomorrow!!!! K-series has some bad rap, but a lot of sports teams still use it as parts can be changed/weight advantage etc some interesting facts on them and some upgrades making the engine much better..... From what I've noticed perhaps some garages use second rate parts etc and don't correctly install head again giving more pain for the owner. It's my first Freelander but second K engine, VVC which was a stonker....

I do the same thing and mine has gone for 102K without a hiccup. As the issue with the 1.8 petrol is movement due to rapid heating/ cooling I think it make a massive difference.

The liners are fine, if someone would like to place a decent bet, yes I'm talking to you "Hat Man" You could win some cash and get a new sticker for your F40!!

Had the Liners moved then they would have been resealed, the sump had to come off "regardless" so I could change the oil rail would have been a small add on job whislt under the engine, and for the record the liners are sitting within the required height and the seals tested.

I don't think I know a great deal about cars, but some of the advice and comments on here don't warrant the byte used in processing it.

The MGF was in tip top condition inside and out, no rust anywhere, I'd spent around 5K on her over the years including a full strip-down and spray, roof, leather, looked like it just rolled off the production line, it was a one off. Given the VVC had a new price for £20K that's a bargin, plus i left the private reg on which he loved.

I've lied to you all, it's actually my third K-series vehicle, I forgot about the Rover 216 Coupe..... That was a lovely motor.
