Somethings Not Right!?

After checking my own engine I can confirm that the 2004 onwards models have already got the upgraded thermostat it's pre 2003 that require the mod.

The MLS gasket were release late 2005, so Freelanders before that will have the old gaskets which cause some trouble.

I'm going to buy an new oil rail since this to was upgraded 2005, so mine has the old thinner model fitted.

I'd say it was OK given it's a K-series. With the upgrades and work shouldn't it last even longer this time???

:D many that have been down this route will confirm it can make little or no difference at all!
12 months from now you could well be doing it all again.
 
For reference, there is an excellent guide to removing and replacing the head here.
Note the comments at the bottom related to turning the crankshaft.
I've heard a number of people comment that sequential HGF failure is much reduced with gasket, dowels, rails and remote thermostat but hey, it's the luck of the draw.

I've had loads of comments about time, cost, etc etc not worth the effort the list goes on and on, clearly some advice is good but others aren't even relevant since change of production so shouting out the same old comments is somewhat wrong and tiresome.... If you feel the need to comment please do so but make it good, when it come down to it I've had poo's with higher IQ...... Ouch!

your totally right...... Only time will tell. As long as I like the car I will chuck money at it as and when needed that's what I do and don't regret a thing. OK might regret saying that!!

OK....taking a deep breath.......Firstly I don't, nor have I ever owned a Gayfender or any other type of 'Fender.

Many of the comments you have had seem to me to be good advice and I would imagine are of considerable help to you in trying to sort out a problamatic vehicle, I only pointed out to you that I regard Fanatics advice worth listening to because he has much greater experience and knowledge than I or many others here and is a valued contributor to this forum.

As for your final comment.....
YOU CAN TAKE YOUR FOOKIN HIGH INTELECT STEAMING LOGS AND SHOVE THEM BACK UP YOUR COCK HUNGRY ARSEHOLE!!!!!
 
angus only the lr oil rail will do,i would fit new water pump at same time, and you need to be very persistent to bleed the cooling system properly before first start up, be sure to fit the shim of the mls gasket if you have skimmed the head
 
Angus, well done for having a go at trying to fix it. I personally would never buy a 1.8, nor would I advise doing so to anyone. But if you've got one, and want to put the effort in to fixing it, then good on ya. Yes it will take some time to do, and may not last forever, but have fun doing it, and enjoy learning. 18 months ago I changed the cam belts on my v6. Never even changed the oil on a car before that. Lets just say I didn't change the belts in the recomended time, but I did learn a lot, and enjoyed every minute of it. Even when things went wrong. Keep us updated on what your doing, take some photo's for us, and keep asking questions if you need help. Peeps on here are always helpful. Just ignore the tratter boys if they're taking the ****.

I've already got some pictures, did the same on my MGF whenever anything got done hence the great sale value I made on it, but will upload them once sorted.

Worked on all sorts of engine in the past Viva's, Fiesta's, Rover Coupe's, Standard 10, MGF, from engine rod to belts, brakes to ball joints I've learnt to do them all, never once have a reduced myself to sending them off to a garage, I'm learning all the time and still have a great deal to learn but for a lad from IT I do alright. Some good advice as been shared but the biggest problem is "everyone's a mechanic and is always right" Me I fix computers for BOE,Barcs,HSBC so my world is logical and until it's attempted it's plausible.

Freelance, cheers for the tip will keep it in mind!

I like it! Me, I wouldn't have bought a 1.8 as it's a nightmare project as I think you now know...

I'm more interested in the re-branding of the other vehicles!

Freelander is good as is ;)
Gayfender = defender

So they race K-series cars.... I seriously wonder what they do to prevent multi-HGF's as such info may help the dread 1.8 Hippo.

Angus I understand what you say about cost of repairs between diesel and petrol. However as previously stated, the diesel's, and TD4 in particular, are made of sturdier stuff and so less likely to need such repairs.

Thermal cycles and temperature transients would be far less of an issue on race engine
 
Can we get one thing clear, I've lived a K-series engine for many a year and with the correct parts and attention they are OK, how many of you on here can say that they've owned a K-series or just ditched it at the first sign of anything?

Having now got all the facts about the mods what year they were brought in, I'm going to list a new forum for others who like myself actually own a K-series Freelander and list the parts years etc to make the motoring life easier and less of a pain.

I can also agree that the TD4 is a good engine, not without it's own issues, but it's the same for most modern vehicles. I've already stated it wasn't about the money I prefer petrol engines and like the Freelander, I had a radius of 200 miles I was willing to travel in finding the one I liked none of the 2.0litres were in as good nick high mileage and poor history records = didn't warrant the price! The TD4's were OK but again tended to come with higher than average miles and were ready for parts to go and VC's taken off (why just spend the cash! it's a 4x4) I bought this one which has alot of the extras by LR, the engine has low miles and lots of service history.

I've probably added to the pain by used the vehicle for short trips to and from work I would however use it as a 4x4 at the weekends.

If I'd known about the upgrades mods sooner I would have check them against my own engine and replaced them before I had any problems, but hopefully the new forum I'm going to start can help others.

I will confirm later today the results of the bottom end test, early indication is good but we will see later today.
 
Its a **** take - a guy that doesnt know a liner from a piston - isnt an expert - comes on here for advice - accept advice from family that ****s his engine - has years of experience in all manner of cars - doesnt take good advice and now is gonna start a new forum to help others.
The guy is a pratt - he wont listen to common sense or reason - a lot of the advice on here has come from previous K series owners and from well documented info from the net.
He dont need or want my help and I am sure he wont see it as any loss. I am out of here.

To be honest, i expect a car to be able to handle regular daily usage, regardless of journey length. After all, it is there to get me from A to B.

If i for a second thought that i would have to think in advance about my trips and where i want to go / choose which i make etc for fear of causing damage to my car, i would get another car. Simple. Thats just my view.

A car should not limit you, it should enable you to do what you require, as a primary task. Therefore it should be capable and reliable.

-- Unless you have spare cash and your hobby is cars etc, but even in that case, the primary car is the daily run around that does all.

I don't think anyone doubts you will eventually at whatever cost get this thing running again and give yourself a pat on the back. The point most are trying to make is that just because you have had a k series before that was trouble free doesn't mean they're any good. There will always be exceptions. You are now seeing the other side of the coin, you bought a second that you thought was good, had good history etc. and this engine is crap and whatever you do to it you will never be able to guarantee its reliability.
People post on this forum all the time saying there 1.8k is using water BUT the head gasket has already been done! It means nothing, these engines are a lottery, particularly it seems when in a freelander.
The consensus is usually along the lines of fix it if possible or fit a second hand engine and sell it.
You'd do well to do the same unless you simply just want to own a car to practice you mechanical skills on regardless of cost. It might be a really tidy freelander but there are others if you look around enough. Ok you like and are familiar with petrol engines but you could possibly also learn a lot from running a diesel.
The reason that many diesel freelanders have higher mileage is simply because they can. Can't see that many 1.8s making 100k.
