Hi Everyone,

I'm considering purchasing the Disco 4 (new) however almost every reliability survey and review site for this 2010 model are indicating that it is or may be an unreliable car. My greatest concern is whether over the course of 5 years of ownership it will present me with many headaches and costs to repair, service and maintain. So I guess my question is, how are you guys finding the Disco 4? Your honest and unbiased opinion would be extremely appreciated.

Am I to take that 'd'oh' as a 'do not purchase'?????

The  indicates that this forum has owner's who mainly own the older Land Rover model's, although this is a great forum full of knowledge .... chance's are you won't find any advice beneficial to owning a Disco 4, incidentally a search and short perusal of the Discovery section would have told you this:rolleyes:

Not one for newer motors, although did drive a new Renault van for it's first 3 years, I'm not even sure who is building them these days (lost track).

If I could afford a new Disco I would buy a JCB Sitemaster :p

We had a Disco 4 demo at work. I drove it for 8 hours, and tried very hard to break it. I failed miserably. This included daft speeds off road and a 20 mile run flat out along a quiet motorway, foot to floor the whole way. Car didn't miss a beat bi wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I had the money - if I won the lottery I'd be straight down the dealer ordering an HSE with all the kit.

Now ok, I know this was only a short test, but I was left with the impression it was by far the best all round vehicle on the road. Not as fast as an X5 on it, but infinitely more capable off. Possibly the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in too.

I would say that LR generally improve reliability with time in a model. Ie, the freelander got more reliable, as did the Disco 3. I think the Disco 4 is an evolution of the 3, so should be pretty well sorted. I would bet on it being as reliable as an X5, more than a 530d.

Hope this helps.

does the d4 have the same problem with clutches as the d3 has. Thing about every 25,000 miles then new clutch needed. LR will replace first time under warranity, after that its your problem to replace. Belive they had a problem with a switch on the gearbox also, can be very costly to sort out. Used to work at hillendale lr. Landrover say that 25k in good for a clutch lol. Told one custmer that towing a 4berth carvan was killing the clutch. Only other thing i can think of was the handbrake would fail. Not to dear to sort out thou.

Been chatting to a fella that works at a local tractor/agricultural supplier for a few years now about what he,s going to replace his 150,000 mile 300 D1 with.

I said I couldnt recommend the D2 highly enough !. Still " maintainable " and a modern vehicle.

Saw him yesterday and asked him if he had made the change yet, his reaction was to roll his eye,s upwards and say, " ask me another question ".

He said it had done more miles on the back of the recovery truck than it had done on its own wheels.

He really seemed p1ssed off about the whole thing, and suggested that Landrover should stick to transfer box,s and gear levers and leave the electrics to the Japs !.

Take from that what you will !

Del.

Plenty of D3s are still under warranty, so I imagine all D4s are. With a dealer warranty, even if it does break down its a minor inconvenience, I guess? Not like us owners of old ones who don't have £30k or whatever to spunk on a new car and have to do all our own repairs to keep costs down, etc etc.

Not the clearest post even after a reread Del! ;) the D2 I'm in jqs only just started having a few issues, and that's after 10 years and 80,000 miles. Until now it's been very reliable. Sure it's not been use that much, and has been regularly maintained, but I reckon that's pretty good. I drove it through 2 bad winters 30 miles each way, cross-country, to wok and it didn't miss a beat.
The only issues with it now are the fact that some parts are tired, and it didntmove for six months due to the previous owner's illness.
Whilst it's no Toyota Corolla, it's pretty reliable in my mind.
