Looking at purchasing an L494 Sport or L405 SDV6 Autobiography 2015 kind of age and around 60k miles and, just looking for some purchase advice really.

I previously posted this on a Range Rover group on Facebook but, to be honest, the replies were pretty useless, including from Americans "get the 5L petrol" "the 3L is the epitome of unreliable". The fact is, this is the UK, petrol and diesel are expensive and, taxes will only continue to be pushed up on big engines. As a consequence, most Range Rover Sports and Vogues sold in the UK are the SDV6.

And, because the 3L is the most common engine, the incidence of problems will of course be higher. The 5L petrol is a great engine - I previously test drove an XFR but, it's too juicy and the power is unusable. The 4.4L V8 is based on an old Ford block from the 90s - I can't see how this is going to be one bit reliable and, it's so underpowered for its size. The 3L TDV6 diesel was a new engine developed by JLR and first introduced on the XF in 2009 (I think), updated in 2015 to the SDV6. My dad has a 2010 XF S with the TDV6 engine (100k miles) and, my brother has a 2016 F Pace with the SDV6 engine (60k miles). My sister has a 2012 Evoque 4 cylinder.

Now, applying some science to it, I would get a 3 year RAC Platinum warranty to it. This is 25% more expensive with the 4.4L diesel than the 3L diesel, which clearly says to me that the 4.4L is less reliable and more expensive to fix.

My experience with JLR cars is that the 3L diesel is actually a peach of an engine and, it's actually the electricals that tend to get a few gremlins after 8+ years.

What are people's experiences? I've heard the SDV6 can be prone to camshaft failure but, how many really? I imagine it's less than 0.1% and not 'most'. Any particular models, years or ranges of engine numbers prone? Any way to spot it? Was an improved camshaft developed? How to keep the problem at bay?

Any other buying advice?

Things I'd probably do:
- replace the infotainment system with the Android aftermarket one
- stage 1 remap

Did the Vogue also have the Dynamic driving mode? Did the Sport Autobiography have the laminated windows?

Any problems with electric towbars failing?

Potential problem areas are between the front and rear bumpers a decent warranty is a necessity.

The SDV6 can be a bit **** in terms of snapping cranks and DPF issues on examples that do mainly short journeys can be an issue. To be fair if your first though and worry is MPG and Tax i'd stop at even thinking about buying a RR.

the 5l in a Jag XFR can be useful in the right areas, but in a 4x4 that weighs the same as a small moon i'd say it would be quite nice..

we don't have many L494 or L405 owners on here but the ones on here have had issues @Tigger Eeyore & Roo had his L405 stuck in a garage for heaven knows how long...

First : Welcome. There is an Introduce Yourself Forum, which is normally where one starts
Second: Vogue is a trim. Which model are you calling a ' Vogue'
Third: I'd stay shtum about your sister's ejoke, if I was you
Fourth: If cost of fuel bothers you , you are looking at the wrong vehicle
Lastly, and by no means least : this little book might help you when asking strangers for advice

1. Why introduce when, I had a specific question? That's just wasting a step
2. The large Range Rover is now commonly called the "Vogue". Even if you were confused, I very clearly said L405 so, that was deliberately obtuse
3. Whatever your feelings about Evoques, they are extremely popular and, Land Rover's best selling model. It is also arguably a car which saved JLR
4. You can go on all you want about fuel consumption and 4x4s blah blah blah. The fact is, the SDV6 is the best selling engine on the L494 and L405. You've also not read what I put above about the old Ford diesel. You would be absolutely mad to buy the 5L petrol. Even some of the most seasoned petrolheads would shy away from that. The SDV6 has plenty of poke.

Now, I respectfully request that you do not comment as all, if your intention isn't to answer the question re buying advice. Ultimately, I get the sense that you haven't really got the foggiest idea.

I'm not even going to entertain him/her anymore. Clearly just trolling.

Genuine advice and experience is welcome from people who have owned the car. Opinions are not.

1) Forum etiquette, hardly a waste of time LandyZone is a community and a bloody good one not many forums are like this one, if you can't respect that fuk off..
2) That is incorrect -
3) It is a fake imitation POS but to be fair there aren't many on here, thankfully it is a disgrace to the badge.
4) It may be the best selling engine, doesn't mean it is a good unit, it isn't.

And finally you have displayed no apparent respect to any fellow members so I would implore you to grow a pair of Bollocks and stop your tantrum eh?

My opinion is that you need to lighten up... You're thinking about buying a Land Rover.......
