Get it cleaned, there's years left in that.

You got a spare ot is @ risforracing missing his? That's what started to burn.. The wire is only charred at the starter end so that's a bonus but the starter is poo...
I'm sure Mark has a spare on his scrapper, at least I hope that is the case. If he's stuck I have a spare but 2 hours away from him.You got a spare ot is @ risforracing missing his?
I have spare starter motor if you need it Mark. What are you using for transport to the UK?No spares, the one out of the omega is different configuration...
240€ for a rebuilt Valeo unit. Not bad but I need to verify the BeCM today.
The bus ain't going to England this time...
Thanks Keith, she's being put to one side for the moment as much as it upsets me to do so. Thanks for your support landyzoners.I have spare starter motor if you need it Mark. What are you using for transport to the UK?
Best option, muddy water may have got into connectors to cause you grief en-route.Thanks Keith, she's being put to one side for the moment as much as it upsets me to do so. Thanks for your support landyzoners.
Yep. Very good reasoning..Best option, muddy water may have got into connectors to cause you grief en-route.

Contact William in Lincoln. He's my go-to guy for all things P38.They're cheap in the UK. All the diesels are the same. The v8 is Lucas instead of Bosch and I think it fits the auto (although it doesn't line up quite as well) but it won't fit the manual diesel as there's a bracket in the way. Classic Rides North Wales might have one at a reasonable price but insist on the Bosch right at the start.
starter motor? Yes I had one from a 525 bmw and it did a good job. That’s the one I sprayed blue. Be easier to source and cheaper than the ones in a JLR box. Grrr has the bimmer alternator so that’s same too. Will one out of a bmw with the same engine do, i am sure @RangeRoller dt fitted one to his. and should be easy to get.
Decided before ordering a new starter motor to investigate the one already on the vehicle first.

Its a BMW 5 series scrappy job
Stripped it down completely and it was in hell of a state but all there. All I needed was a 10mm + 12mm spanner, flat head screwdriver wire brush and few rags. Use contact cleaner if you have it.
Had 1/4 bucket crap out of there and some parts of the commutator were broke.
Brushes were worn unevenly so rearranged and glued broken plastic retainers, cleaned it all up including external contacts, reassembled gearing with fresh grease in gears, shafts and solenoid arm.
This is it mostly disassembled with most of the crap off but still black and rusty.

It went together bit worn but clean & shiny. I didn't have contact cleaner so substituted little brake/clutch cleaner. now starts better than ever, really has some go in it
I'm not a mechanic, engineer or horologist, haven't done this before and don't even own a complete socket or spanner set, just odd ones
I would advise to atleast try this before buying new unit ; if you c*ck it up or it's past repair you will just buy a new unit anyway. This saved me best part of £100 and got my vehicle running next day. It really was alot easier than I anticipated.
Are the blue ones better than the orange Jack or did you run out of paint.starter motor? Yes I had one from a 525 bmw and it did a good job. That’s the one I sprayed blue. Be easier to source and cheaper than the ones in a JLR box. Grrr has the bimmer alternator so that’s same too.
You one of the yellow vest brigade then MarkQuite possibly the dented sill hidden behind the plastic outer casing.. Last year offroading near Paris...
eeee them were day, I remembered it every time I see sand in the car, got a new gearbox out of it, the sand ground it down after a few weeks, only THEN did someone tell me about the PLUG!!! (Or lack of)Lucas fix caused me some problems a year or two ago so the box was drained and refilled a few times to clear it out. Anyhow.....
That's the least of my worries... @Dopey... View attachment 258999 View attachment 259000
It almost caught fire as everything was running, opening shutting and over heating... I had to go in and pull the battery lead... Thanks landrover the feeble battery connections... A stupid move of not checking the water...
I'm not fûcking angry at myself... Honestly
