show your camping trailer

I'm thinking of building a camping trailer to make our trips easier, the idea being it will contain all our gear so all we have to do is pack cloths and food, hitch up the trailer and go.(with 3 kids last minute trips just don't happen anymore)

Thought I would start this thread so people could add a link or show photos of there trailers and give a brief description of what it contains. That way other landy fans including myself can gather ideas from others success.

I've done the usual searchs and most pics are spread all over the net so this thread will hopefully bring them all together.

I am in the process of building one as we speak, I have started with a normal trailer tent but was picky with the deisgn, it has to be something that doesnt rely on the ground (most either fold over onto the floor or are built up around a floor standing frame) so that you can lift the trailer and also it has to be narrow enough to fit within a standard landrover track width. I ended up getting a Pennine Aztec off eBay for £300 and it was perfect, it has gas heating, 2 hobs and grill, 240V hook up, plenty of storage in it and 2 good size double beds one of which turns into a seating area, I will also be rigging up 12V lighting and a stereo which will run off a leisure battery. It started out as this:



I then built a frame to take a standard defender axle which I retrofitted leaf springs on to:



I then unbolted the original trailer axle and bolted this unit onto the original trailertent chassis (which was a nice heavy galv'd chassis), I had to cut and weld the A-Frame section and refit this as well, came out like so:



I then got some sheet steel and made up the wheel arches, I also extended the legs so they would reach the ground:



And this is it open although the poles aren't exxtended hence why it looks a bit baggy:




I am planning to get rid of the legs and put on out riggers instead, this will allow me to put the side supports directly to the out riggers instead off all the way to the ground and it will also give more stability. The only other issue I need to sort now is how to get in the thing, its quite a step up!!

That's a brilliant idea, I've heard people ask if this can be done but yours is the first I've seen.

Its been sprayed recently and a lot more work has gone into it. We leave the UK in 28 days and will be taking it to Nordkapp and then down through Europe across to Central Asia and onto Siberia (Hopefully).

Jongould - thats some good work there matey, I was looking at doing the same thing last year, I asked some opinions on here but lots of people said the frame of the camper trailers wouldn't stand up to being dragged thru lanes etc. Do you think the square steel frame might twist at all? Maybe some extra triangulation might strengthen it up a bit? Keep us up to date mate, looking forward to some updates and again great work!

The trailer tent has its own steel chassis as well as the new one I have made up for the springs so I am expecting that to be pretty strong, I am making up a rock slider all the way round the outside which should also help brace it up so hopefully it will be nice and strong. I have put it on the back burner at the moment, I will restart it in a month or two to get it ready for summer...

Cheers for that matey, I've been looking for a half decent sankey to start my project but I might now go back to my original idea and borrow your design, I figure the extra space of a trailer tent over a RTT will help on rainy days

It's just some black paint and a pair of matching wheels/tyres.

I'd post some photos of my sankey widetrack conversion & rooftent if i knew how to do it! can someone tell me?

That looks smart, good job! Off topic, have you fitted the steel wheels back-to-front or cut and re-welded the centres?

I have fitted them back to front to give me enough room to get around the trailer, I am now contemplatiung changing the axle though as I need a handbrake to retain the stability when its all set up, I can chock the wheels but would rather a proper job so thinking about what to do, I may use a Shogun axle as that has a cable handbrake mechanism plus I am using a Shogun now anyway...
