Hi, i really want to raise the height of my Series 3 but as I am only a student, money to buy a lift kit is tight. I have been told that it is possible to unbolt the axles and remount them under the leaf springs instead of on top of them, but I have also been told that this may put the diffs at an unsuitable angle. I don't want to break anything and really don't know what to do. Has anyone got any advice?

Cheers, John.
:)

You can do it, it's a right fag, it'll trash your props, yer motor will handle like crap, you'll gain nothing from it & it'll look ridiculous! Other than that, it's a great idea.

Save yer pennines & buy some 235/85's on 16" rims, even a secondhand set with some tread left. They'll fill your wheel arches better & actually lift your diffs & give more ground clearance. ;)

ear can you actually GET lift kits fer a series? does it just mean changing it from leaves to coils?

yeh like matt said , extended shackles ... but my opinion will always be , thus , unless you asbolutly need to lift it then dont bother cos it aint worth the hassle . just put new good quality springs and shockers on it with some decent tyres and it'll take you where you wonna go .... you'd be suprised what a well sorted series will do .

god made it the way it is , armys alover the world seemed to think they were ok . just my opinion and its up to you ....

No I think you're right, I'm just toying with the idea of properly kitting out an 80 for some serious offroad.

I've fitted 1 ton shackles, gives a useful lift at both ends for £30.
Also fitted 9.00x16 tyres, gives huge lift, but some bodywork mods required.
I now have 13" clearance under the diffs.

jesus that looks good , never seen a shorty on 900's before .... nice ..

Gearing isn't too bad, I just use low 2nd, where i used to use low 3rd. Cruises on motorway like it's got an overdrive. Acceleration was a problem from standstill, but I'm fitting a 2.5 N/A now, so hopefully a bit more oomph will overcome that. Biggest problem is downhill in low 1st is a bit quick, but I'm pretty fearless so that doesn't worry me. Ultimately a 1 ton or 101 Transfer Box would be the answer, but they're as rare as rocking horse ****.

storage i would have thought matt , i doubt he'll use that for towing ...
Absolutely right. Just somewhere to attach the towing bridle, to stop it dangling in the way when not in use. Taking it off-on all of the time when it's covered in mud was destroying the inside, so I put it on before laning and remove it after it's been washed.

The steering really was hardly affected. Only had to adjust the steering stops a tiny bit, so it's still only 1 field to turn around.
