Greetings lads
I bought what is prob a 83 Series 3 and drove it Home aroun 60kms drive.
I noticed a few leaks near the oil filter and a leak in what I think is the rear pinion seal but only in INCLINE position

Since I bought to fix it myself and customize under my own terms and since I am a total starting home car mechanic:

A. I dont know where to start with these leaks and what tools I need. I figured so a far a ratchet set, some Mechanic's bed to slide under
B. From where it is leaking and what are the parts called so I can search for
tutorials

Also, I heard in tutorials about pinions that there are a few types of diffs. Do you know what type is mine so I can search DIY videos ?

Welocome to the forum.
Where abouts are you ?

Looks a lot warmer than the UK.

Yes there is some leakage, but I have seen a lot worse.
I suggest the first thing you do is give the car a good wash, change the oil and fit a new engine oil filter, then top up the oil in the differential.
The oil in the diffs will be an EP90 the engine will be a 20W50.
With the area clean it will be easier to see where the leaks are coming from.
If the differential is still leaking you need to change the seal and (possibly) the pinion - this is a relatively easy job and there are many tutrorials on U-Tube.

It looks like a Salisbury rear axle, but doesn't look exactly like mine. Maybe just dirty or the light. It's easier to tell from the rear. A good clean-up would help. The boot on the front propshaft looks fairly new - they usually don't last very long.

Thank ya for the warm welcome
The answers are really interesting n helpful especially for someone starting out

Excellent observation btw miktdish, I am residing in Hellas - Greece, prob u can recognise warmer climates with ease due to the unrelenting climate in the UK heh ?😁

I have some questions :
A.

Do you mean that the rear axle (is what they call also a differential?) type is Salisbury. I saw a U tube video with a so called Rover axle . So there are two types of axles ? Rover n Salisbury
I ll photo it from the rear too (if it doesnt mind)

By the boot you mean the plastic - rubber cover ?

B. Guys how do you recommend to wash a workhorse like this. With a water pressure pump or just a hose will do with some gas and brush for the greasy stuff ?

C. Do you guys know a web store with a good stock of consumables (like seals, filters, and the like ) that ships outside of the UK ?
I have found some but usually they dont have all the seals. Would be good to buy them all the Series 3 seals for a fresh start

D.
Top tip if it is a standard s3 is chock the wheels before removing the propshaft.
Oh got it because they will move right
Noone so far from my search had mentioned this detailed tip.
How to check if it is a standard s3? All I know is it is a 2.250 diesel made in Salisbury 109 WB

Thats an easy and good start .
Prob will change the whole pinion to know where I am standing and keep the old one as a spare.
If you happen to know a store that ships here or generally outside of the UK let me know brother

A workshop manual either book or download. Proper Land Rover job.
For doing Diff seal Prop bolt removal tool and oil seal removal tool and as others say a "how to do" video on the tube. A chap called "steamwally" makes good video's.
Ask away for more info.

Cheers for the recommendation. Think I ve casually watched steamwally videos

Just seen your post. You have Salisbury diff, boot is the flexi cover on front prop joint, degreaser and pressure washer for cleaning. Someone overseas from UK can recommend parts supplier.

Welcome.

Dont tell Greta but yes any good degreaser just keep the hose away from any electrical bits if you can.

I have used Paddocks in the UK they ship to me here and deal with all the paperwork which is handy.

Also A good manual that will give you part numbers and description even if old the part numbers are easily searched and cross referenced to newer numbers, plenty available free online if you search. So you know what you need, because there is nothing worse than getting the wrong bit as you(we) have to wait longer than most to get the bits.
If you are unsure ask here with pics as lots of guys will help.

I am not familiar with your model but yes I have to agree looks like a Salisbury type axle. have a quick goggle and the 2 type differences are plainly obvious.

Be prepared to buy and fill a big tool box too, Have fun :) .

You’ll find everything you need in the workshop manuals and parts catalogues
nice to get under the landy when it’s warm , in winter not so much
looks like you got a rear power take off ,, is that fitted to gearbox
you have the 5 main bearing engine too , stronger than the 3main bearing

Nice to know the 5 vs 3 main bearing answer, I had it as a question since I saw a post here about it
How do you recognise it ?

Also by "rear power take off" do you mean that when the landy is on 2x4 mode it moves through the rear ?

No I think hes saying the shaft under the big grey bit above the towbar.
There is probably a lever in the cab to connect it so it spins, I dont know for sure but gurus will be along to confirm.

Oh I am fully prepared for the toolbox my friend, fully prepared :p
Thanks for the store, just checked it ! Since the forum might not want to "advertise" it and since you didnt mention it too, is it the one that say paddock spares right? They ship to Hellas and they seem to have a good selection of spares

Just curious what is your Landy?

BTW, fck greta I wont even capitalize her name

Aah ye , it is for using to power mainly agriculture machines for the fields it is pretty common here prob in Bulgaria too. They were mainly used by farmers

The oil leak on the engine is probably the rocker cover gasket
Re the oil leak on the oil filter, check the recess for an old oil seal. It's possible one was left in then another one put on top of it

Thanks a bunch
Prob the front boot looks neat cause of the oil dripping :vb-lol:

Yes that is the store. Sorry but thought just the first name was enough. Its not advertising when it comes as a recommendation its fine. So if you find another good supplier you are free to mention (my thinking anyway)

Which 1. we have 3 of the bloody things reliable motors

We have an L322, P38(630r) and a 90 MPI.
Oh and a P38 spares car :D .
The avatar is the little 90 "mudball"

PTOs are common here, But defenders (or variants) are not. We get asked often if its for sale :).
