For 6 months now I've been planning on completely stripping all the rusty bits off my 200tdi disco and rebuilding it. Now I've run in to a few issues which is making me think I'll be better off scrapping it and starting again with another disco that doesn't need as much work done or at least has an mot to see me through winter.

With mine all in at the moment I'm thinking I need to spend £1200 ish, which I don't have. The place I was going to be doing the work has fallen through too so it's impossible for me to do at the side of a main road.

My question being.........how much will I get for A. scrapping it or B. breaking it? I was thinking if I can get £500 for it, then add £700 of my own money I can hopefully buy a better nick disco with at least 6 months mot. I'll keep wheels/tires, lights, snorkel and other added bits to go on the new one and get rid of the rest.

Your thoughts please...........

Does it have an mot at present? If it can be driven away its worth more than if it can't.

You''ll get a lot mo're for it breaking it but it will take time and effort... can you be bothered?

Where are you located in the country?

Mot has expired. I realize breaking it will take more time and I wasn't really blessed with too much patience, but if it's going to get more more money then maybe I'll have to try and learn some patience!! The disco is in Hereford.

As you are a doctor I'm surprised you can't afford to have it made good.

Someone's been editing their posts !!

Is there not a chance that you could spend less than £1200 repairing it ?

You said you could put £700 towards a new 'un, could you not get enough repairs done for that, so it would pass it's mot?

What has to be done, perhaps if we knew more we could help?

New gearbox, new sills both sides, boot floor and both side bits of the floor, wheel arch, both inside wings and light boxes, suspension I think needs replacing, some of the brake calipers need renewing, front bumper, headlight, indicator, wing( courtesy of some prick hitting me head on) and a few odds and sods need doing to the bodywork!!

Now I know if I had the space I could chip away at this myself but with nowhere to do it its impossible. Garages I've been to have told me to scrap it and start again with a better nick disco.

Are you looking for another 200tdi or a 300.
Prices are starting to rise at the moment.
If you are going for another 200 then strip yours and keep the spares that are any good and scrap/weigh in the rest.

I'd like another 200 really but not too sure on the difference between the 200 and 300 other than looks? I always thought the 200 was more simple and the better off road choice, but please correct me if I'm wrong!

All the newish bits I've put on I'll take off but any other bits can go with it. Maybe try and sell the engine then scrap the rest.

You'll be in the same boat with another one.

And your Disco has the same value as all the other ones.

I say this because last year I was at the same point as you are now. Mine is a 91 V8i Disco 1 and needed welding everywhere. And slowly I started to work on it to get everything sorted. Welded some points myself, had some structual points welded by someone who knows what he is doing. So I got it working until MOT would pass. Yes costed me £1600 in the end. But would needed to spend that anyway on any simular vehicle if I'd chance it. In orher words I stuck with my own vehicle. Now I am getting close to what I want, and boy ! That' a great feeling. ,

And I love the V8, it has never let me down and that's why I am sticking with my old Disco 1.

Yes you goto get yourself a vehicle to go around while you're working on it.

But it's worth the effort.

Remember !! You're better of with the devil you know that the devil you don't !

Stick with it !!

Mike. :5bsifone:

Scrap metal values vary hugely, some scrap dealers will give you good money and some wont, if you want to get rid have you tried one of these people who advertise clearing scrap cars??? they may give you better money....

But all that said, if you can be bothered to break it your self then maybe advertise it on ebay as breaking for spares (buyers remove parts) it has to be said its worth more in parts than as a whole car if it has no test on it...

i sold my engine for £200 just to get rid. tranny went for £50, steering box + front prop for £50, etc.. will keep some spares then weigh rest in. mine wasn't as bad as yours sounds but i was lucky that a bargain came up (that just needed centre boot floor), as i was umming and ahhing, so no brainer. its nearly paid for by the bits iv'e sold too. if you want a 200, i'd have a look for a decent one with your spare cash, it may need some work/MOT but will possibly work out easier than repairing knackered one

A few questions.........would I get a half decent 300tdi for £1000, what year did the ecu come in on the 300tdi, are the wheels the same size as my 200tdi and how would you advertise my disco for breaking? Advertise bits individually or the vehicle as a whole? The big bits like engine i presume they strip themselves if you advertise them separately?

Thanks for the offer mike but I'm going to break a few bits off it myself then scrap it. Can anyone help me with the above list of questions??

you would get a half decent 300 for a grand at a push, prices are high now but you will get one for a grand if lucky.

cars with good bodies demand 2k upwards.

300s are better and worse, if i was in your position, assuming yours really is ****ED and not just you being scared, then i would look for a body/rolling chassis maybe.

you could buy a decent body off a geezer that was going to weigh it in after he's broke the car, probably nick the body for 200 quid, then just start building the car out of yours.

bonus is that you get to choose what bits you fit and what you dont, you can refurb everything along the way etc etc, and ebd up with a really tidy motor built to your exct spec.

this of course takes time, and if you havent got space you need to get some :(
