Scrapping my disco?

htere's a garage down the road from me with a 300 for £695 - not looked at it so it may be a rot box though.

I got my 300 for £1k with full mot, 6 months tax, 3 1/2" body lift, big mud tyres, etc. so they are available. (boot floor was ok - sills are rotten though)

If you were to break it I would stick the 200tdi on eBay for somewhere between £250 and £300 depending how many of the ancillaries you leave on.

then post in the for sale section on here you are breaking a disco - you could also post it on eBay - you must state that you will list any part anyone wants on eBay and all transactions will be done through eBay else eBay will delete your listing.

Then just take off parts as people need them :)

paid a £1k for my nearly standard 96 300 in jan this year. And it needed a bucket load of welding. mate of mine just sold his standard 92 200tdi for £1400, so i guess its either a case of spend the money on what you have and know its a good one, or break it, buy another and run the risk of all the same problems again

Thanks all for the help. So far I'm thinking of selling starter motor, back box(1 year old), HD track rod bars, safari snorkel, engine, transfer box, axles. Then maybe a few bits like lights, clock, alternator possibly. Then scrap whats left. I guess if I put it on ebay then they'll have to come and help themselves to the big bits?

You should be selling much more than that, sell every last ****ing part if you are going to do it right, you should weigh in the body completely stripped then get it picked up for steel, weigh it in as a car and you get contaminated rate, can approach £150/ton for good mixed steel.

Sell the panels or weigh the skins in as ally, the whole lot.

Will be an expensive exercise if you don't do it properly!

Plus there's the fact that you're scrapping a 200 which is a bit naughty.

This is one of the reasons I don't want to do it.......because I'm a sentimental ****! The reason I wasn't going to town on it completely is because I'm short of time and space.I was thinking get rid of the big bits then scrap the rest. I'm trying to get as much ££££££'s out of it in as short of time possible. I'll get the bits off I want to keep this week end then get advertising the rest.

Mr Noisy you know your stuff, when did the 300tdi get an ecu? Am I right in trying to avoid this if I wanna get the disco in pretty deep water?

Well offers there.

If you decide to strip it.....

Aprox £150 weighing chassis and shell in.

Sunroofs if they don't leak are easy to remove and you can sell on eBay ( just add vw in label). I made £80 for the pair.

All the seats if they are ok sell.

Even windscreen if un chipped rear screen too.

Where roughly are you?

Rear seats are fine i think, front seats have seen better days. Front windscreen is chipped, again I think! Rear window is fine except some of the heater lines don't work. Not sure on the sunroofs but if I have any doubt I'd rather not sell.

I'm just a stones throw from you, I'm in Hereford.

Ah ok. Often some good cheap discos round out area. Mate got a 300for £600 needing just a few jobs. So being sensible.........I bought a 90

That sounds like he got a good deal, was it advertised locally? My dads got a 90 which needs some tlc and I reckon if I really pushed him then he'd take £1000-£1500 for it. Trouble is I'm back to owning a vehicle that needs work and no money to afford the work!

Hi mate

Only the autos have an engine ecu, they all have some sort of electrics unless you find a super basic model.

200s without an alarm have zero electronics whereas as 300s can have electric window controllers, spider unit, alarm controller, immobiliser unit etc etc.

Try to find an early (M reg etc) disco with basic spec for best results, that said Paul D has got a P reg with windy windows and probably bugger all else, ideal for the off roader!

If you can find one without an alarm/immobiliser it's great, otherwise consider removing it. Electric windows are worth having although not as reliable as the 200 window system. A 300 manual will be unstoppable under water without alarm/immobiliser, they have no ecu as such :)

Remember, this is only the plan.

Tell us the result when you have completed all.

My guess is that, at the end, you'll end up with the same result as if you were to spend £1200 to fix you present Disco. Just that scapping it and collecting the money will take months.

Saying that, nothing gained, and nothing lost.

Hope you gain.

Thank you Noisy, you excel again ;)! Looks like I'll go by your recommendation and look for a manual M reg. I'd like electric windows and I also like to fit my own alarm as there's a few borrowers around here! However, I try my best to inclose it and waterproof to avoid issues.

The plan is now in full swing! I dont have the space to do the work myself and I don't have the money either to get it all done so I can get an mot. I understand that buying another can land me in the same position, however, if it has 6 months mot on it allows me 6 months to save and hopefully in 6 months time I'll be living somewhere different, with a drive.

I'm a bit apprehensive that I'm making a mistake but I'm going to bite the bullet and hope it works out!
