I took the plunge and stuck 20 litresoveggie oil in yesterday, the beast seems to run ok on it but was a lot harder to start than normal this morning anyone got any ideas why or is the veggie oil a bit thicker ? anything else i should look out for ?
 
A couple years ago we experimented with veggie oil on a 300tdi we found out that the amount you can run varies on the weather so in the summer as much as 45% mix but in the winter no more than 15% as the combustion point is higher in the oil than the diesil (obviously), After speaking with some engineer tekkie this because the oil solidfies in the fuel pump over night (but wont do any damage) which is why its harder to start in the morning, we than used the blocks out off storage heaters wired them to a normal plug layed them under the truck for 10 to 15 mins these give enough heat to warm the oil in the lines and she would start on a higher mix in both winter and summer, that beasty is still running on that ok, and i can say transits of any age (even the new ones) will run on the same mix.

yup, that'll be it, if you look at some of the oil thats been left out through the night it gets a lot thicker, this is why if you want to convert to 100% WVO you have to install a heat exchanger to preheat the oil.
but at the mix you've got it wont do any real harm but as graeme says you have to vary the WVo content with the weather in the high summer i get up to about 50% WVo to doosel, but over the last winter I was down to straight diesel when it got down to -15C around here
 
Pal of mine ran a 300tdi on veggie.
Fitted a couple of preheaters, one just immediately after the diesel filter,one just immediately before the injection pump.He used a mix of 80% V.O. to 20% D.
It went well for him for about 12 months and then things started to gum up.
He was forever changing diesel filters leading up to the first year,as well as the odd injector.
Eventually it all went pear shaped and he had an engine rebuild,he runs the recon engine on bio-fuel smells brilliant when you stand behind his Landy.
I wouldn't dream of putting anything other than BP Ultimate Diesel in my Tee-Dee 5 goes like a demon especially with the EGR removal.
 
my truck runs well on asda finest, some funny looks at the till with 10. 3L tubs of oil

iv put 6 in so 18L to £30 of diesel,= runs just the same over the 6 mile iv done.... it smells !!!!

Back when I was doing it rapeseed oil was 56ppl. It was found (although not by scientific research) that those on this forum that were using the bigger bottles that contained antifoaming agents were havingsome stuttering and bad starting problems while those of us running on 100% without the anti-foaming agents had no or very few problems. The antifoaming agents were suspected of being damaging/abrasive to engines and causing premature wear. This was again not proven but I along with several others preferred the better safe than sorry approach of buying the smaller bottles without the anti-foaming agents.
 
I treid tis a couple of years ago in my Mondeo. Tbh, i found i was not getting the MPG I was getting from deisel. I can tell you some folk add paraffin. and if you want to go a lttle deeper , you can get info off ebay about usig oil and..on there...well last time I looked .there was a proper system for sale for converting oil into bio deisel..you can easly do this in your shed with used oil:)

What is the benefits of veggie oil the price of a litre is over a pound just as diesel a year ago it was half the price it is now and may have been worth it.
 
Sorry, but running your rig on veggie oil would render you the biggest tight-arse I can think of...even more than the Mazda 121 owner with LPG I saw at the servo earlier...1.2lt engine on gas is pretty hard to top for that award! :p

Just put in the fluids it's designed for and harden up about prices...diesel is cheaper than petrol afterall. If running a 2.5lt diesel (or whatever) is too much, then buy a hatchback for gawd-sakes and adjust the lifestyle. I understand that fuel of any type is more expensive than here, but! Sure you're being good to the environment n all, n good on you, but honestly...
