Recently it takes a long time for my diffloc light to go off after use, like a couple miles up the road.

A few times I put her in reverse, backed up a couple feet then drove forward and it cut off instantly?

Is this correct?

Yep

Either reverse a very short way, or get one set of wheels on slippery surface going forwards

Think it's do do with how the diff engages mechanically on a cam or somethink

Quite normal, reversing a bit undoes any wind-up that has occurred while the diff was locked. I always make sure to get the light out before going any distance on tarmac as the diff is still locked while the light is on, even if you've moved the lever back.
