Disco 2 auto going into reverse but not forwards

2002 Disco 2 with auto box goes in reverse without problems but won’t drive forward.
The two lights on the dash flashed up a few times but have gone out now the light beside the selecter flashes the oil is full and not black
do I take the box out or could it be something else ie electric problem
I see a few threads with this problem it no solution
I don’t have a reader here so no codes

It looks very like electrical issue so make somehow to get the codes retrieved dont remove the box just like that

Fitted a spare XYZ switch the lights come on if I try drive and press the accelerator it tries to go forward a little so I assume the gearbox is faulty

Have you tried to drive off in 1st gear?

Good point and i wonder if the dreaded P joint isn't causing this.

Hi yes it seems to engage but wont drive it has a go if I give it lots of revs but nothing

There can be 19 reasons for those warning lights to come on and only 3 of them based on mechanical issues so i say again better do somehow to retrieve the fault code before you presume the worst.... unless you want to remove the box then realise it was something else and end up to read the code as last resort

On a side not here sierrafery I see your location is a Arad is this correct and is it Romania, don’t panic I’m not a stocker lol I drive from uk to Bulgaria a few times a year sometimes through romania sometimes Serbia so if you need any parts brought down let me know

Now on topic, try a stall test

Did the test confirm slipping ( thank you for that) ,Oil smells burnt taking gearbox out is there anything I should lookout for when doing this so I don’t damage something lol

Taken starter motor out can only find 3 holes in the inner plate with bolts in is this normal they are only about 15 mm long

Are you talking about the flex plate to torque convertor bolts?

Only 3 used on the HP22, 4 if its an HP24, which yours wont be as that was only used for the 4.6 V8.

Has anyone got a part’s diagram for this section please
It look like a flywheel with 3 holes in and some machine indentation to balance it the bolts are the other side of this

Do a search for the workshop manual they are available free on tinternet

But here this should get you going.

From memory 3 is right cos if you wants to fit a TC froma V8 it needs to have 4, so peeps do conversion fings. But I've never looked at mine so can't be sure.
It'll be in the Haynes I expect as well as on RAVE.

I have a Haynes manual, it might be me I look at the images Marjon sent and it’s a clear so either need a better manual or to take a time out sometimes I can see for looking

Haynes manuals have really gone down over the years.
I can rmember all the exploded diagrams you used to get, the decent phtotgraphs and the help to do quite hard stuff like strip and rebuild gearboxes and even differentials.
Now they are just "elf and safety" mad, and full of stuff like "this will be too hard for you, take it to a garage there's a dear!" (pat on head). no exploded diagrams and the pics look like they are taken down a mine with a candle.
