Replacing CV Joints

Im replacing my 2 CV joints on my 2003 TD5 110.

Ive stripped everything off, no problems and bought the new CV joints, my question is, whats the best way of getting the cv joint on to the half shaft without breaking the little catch clip that sits into the grove on the half shalt and then enters inside the CV joint.

First attempt resulted in failure and me breaking the little clip. I placed the half shaft into my vice and then placed the CV joint upside down on top of the half shaft and gave it a good wack with a piece of timber and heavy hammer...end result broken clip.

Any tips from anyone whos carried out this job would be appreciated

stand cv on its end ,start shaft ,push clip in with screw driver x 2 hit end of shaft ,2 people is easier
