Hi all.

Replaced my wheels at the weekend and decided to get some extra locking wheel nuts. Went to put them on yesterday and the shiny metal covers for the nut WILL NOT BUDGE! I used the plastic cover gadget supplied with the locking wheel nut and it ended up breaking! Is this a common problem? I will go to a tyre fitters to have them take them off but I am concerned if I ever get a flat at the side of the road!

Those covers are meant to come off right? I'm not being mad?

Cheers.

Could be the last person left them on while they tightened them up rather than put them on after.
Try putting a socket or wheel brace on them and gently twisting either way.

I thought he meant those chrome caps you get to go on normal nuts to make em look pretty...
what type of wheels you got on, can you get some long nose pliers on em??

So perhaps stupid question... Do standard nuts feel loose and like they have a cover on them?!? These ones feel like they have a similar cover to the locking wheel nut ones...

Thanks.

That's what I thought. The caps to just make them look pretty... Would be weird to have the wrench go directly onto them. They'd get destroyed.

Fixed nut covers have a flat face, the removable ones which fit on the locking nuts have a dimple in the centre of the face. If you put the plastic removal tool on the wrong nut you have to undo the nut with a socket and extension bar, then slide the nut out the plastic tube.

Get yourself a 27mm socket and a long breaker bar, gentle pressure and no damage :)

The short arsed wheel brace usually supplied is rubbish.

And don't let any tyre fitters near the locking ones with their air guns.

Ok. So looks like the shiny ones are fixed from what people are saying! Ok. Need a new plastic thingy as destroyed it putting it on a fixed nut and then literally breaking it off. Nearly damaged the nice new painted wheels! Will have a check when I get home!

Yeah. Looks like you undo the bolts with the covers on. They seem integral to the nut! Very odd.

Cheers for words if wisdom all.

Sounds like you have Range Rover wheel nuts. That's exactly how they are. The 'covers' stay on the normal nuts (27mm) and only come off the locking ones. You'll find a new cover removal tool on ebay under Range Rover P38 or dealer or breaker.

Personally I use a pair of pipe-grips for this purpose. The flats of the jaws are parallel allowing a firm grip without damaging the cover (if worried wrap a thin piece of cloth around the cover first) and just pull. Keep a pair of grips in the vehicle toolkit as well.
As already stated, only the locking nut cover comes off.

They were the RR wheel nut covers I guess. Put an extra locking wheel nut on the rear. Stupidly took the top one off first. Duh!
