I am aware of the difference between front hubs with the older versions having wider spaced wheel bearings and preload set with two hub nuts and the newer ones having narrower spaced wheel bearings for use with the tube spacer for preload and fitted with a stake nut. However does anyone have the measurements or an easy way to tell them apart when they are not fitted to a vehicle?

The malvern 4x4 spares day is in a few weeks and I am on the look out for a set of early (wide bearing spaced) hubs but I want to be able to be sure I am actually getting what I think I am, rather than relying on the seller. The last time I did this a few years ago I relied on the seller assuring me they were a matched pair from and an early vehicle and I ended up with one of each! This was then an expensive mistake as I needed to then buy a new hub as I only noticed when everything was disassembled and I came to refitting.

I normally go by the stub half shaft end.
Swat up on disco 1 90/110 ends these have the 2 taper bearings.
But there are differences on the shim pin/swivel housing which you can tell unti stripped as internal pin varies

Do you mean on the hub itself or before disassembling? I am looking to buy a set of early front hubs but they will be completely stripped and off the vehicles in a pile of other rusty Land Rover parts. So am trying to establish visual or measurable differences that will ensure I get the correct part.

on the hub itself. Look at centre(of wheel) they vary over years. Early ones have large plastic caps. 200tdi domed,300 also small plastic caps but flat faced.

Do you have a spare drive shaft flange? The inner diameters are different so you can tell that way.. I had this headache, my rears are the old ones and my front are the new ones.

Surely the plastic cap is on the drive flange not the hub? I am looking for purely hub differences as am likely to be presented with a box of hubs (with or without brake discs and bearings) at the auto jumble and want to make sure I get the correct ones.

I might have, I will check my spares but I think I got rid of the old last time I swapped them over. Do you mean the inner diamiter of the hub is different to fit the flange, or the diamiter of the flange is different?
