Hi Guys,
Just removed the full prop and vcu from my wifes freelander 1.8 due to bearing noise and a high pitched whine. when removed i noticed that the VCU damper had come apart and the sleeve can be pulled free. and although the propshaft bearings appeared to be worn visually as they had not been fitted at 90 degrees to the prop there does not appear to be any movement sideways or noise when spun.
When removed the bearing noise and whine appear to have gone does this mean that the problem is only with the propshaft or could it still be something like the rear diff (not sure if with the prop off it has taken a load off the diff) (does the diff still turn as it would with the prop fitted) would the transfer box still make noise if it was faulty with the propshaft removed?
