Apologies for starting another thread. This one concern the prop shaft. I've taken it off complete in order to replace the carrier bearings on the bench. I read that on freelanders the props are individually balance so there is no need to mark at the front and rear diff. But, I want to be sure before I separate everything out that I do not need to mark anything where the VCU is separated from the props.

You are correct. Props are balanced as seperate items.
Thanks Andy. So there is no other reason for marking other than to be sure the splines are aligned in the original position when reconnecting? Ie. it would only be necessary if the prop shaft as a whole were balanced instead of each side individually.

Well the VCU rotates so balancing as an assembly is futile!! In the good old days it was always said that the prop was balanced on the car and so the flange on the diff etc were included in the balancing. Don't know if it is true or not. Freelander props can be purchased and fitted without any balancing needed over and above the fitted weights at manufacture. Note that the diff has 4 bolt holes and they are not equal spacing. Prop will only fit 2 ways and not 4 !! Just one to watch.

No need to mark anything on the VCU end of the propshafts as the VCU ends rotate separately anyway. Obviously if you're changing the UJs on the diff end, then you'll need to make sure yoke goes back on the same way.

Excellent, thank you.

I think I know the answer to this one already, but nothing ventured - is there a half decent budget VCU bearing out there?

Waste of time. What I have done to keep costs down is purchased a set with cheap bearings. Press out and replace bearings with FAG or SKN bearings. For the effort in changing them fit the FAG bearings. Bell Engineering sell them.
