if i need a new box would you recommend buying a refurb or having mine redone.who does reasonable boxes?how much is it likely to cost?cheers

I got mine from Ebay. It was an MOD Recon. I have been very pleased with it. It cost around £400

i've rebuilt it myself now for about £120.it isn't as daunting as made out,in fact it's really quite simple.no special tools required, and parts are cheap, mainshaft for example £29 +vat.i'd recommend anyone has a go.

I did mine too, if you can replace a gearbox yourself then it's not much more of a stretch to rebuild one. I'd even say that it is a nicer job to do than messing about with all those nasty seized bolts getting the floor and seat box off. If your layshaft is broken (in a SIII box) though, don't bother they cost about £150 I think.

Had my gearbox and transfer box reconed at aztec landrovers for £500. Its in deapest lincolnshire martins a top bloke he's available on 01507 358408 . Well worth it and seems to have stopped all (most of) my oil leaks

Cor Blimy,

Martin in deepest Linconshire should be a top bloke for charging you £500 for a box. Ashcrofts are dear and they are cheeper than your martin...

if you look in the back of Autotrader you'll find loads of back street transmission specialists. In my experience they are very good and a fraction of the price of the places with big fancy premises and big fancy adverts.

Get a recon from these people http://www.4x4gearboxes.co.uk/index.htm
A hell of a lot cheaper than Ashcroft. I think they cost about £260 and I may be a bob or two out with that. Centanly below £300, take a look for your selve's.

whats wrong with keeping yer eyes open on ebay and buying a good used one fer £30

That's an even better idea and I did just that.

I brought a Series 3 Gearbox & with Transfer box and Hand Brake at a Landy Jumble at Sibbertoft only a month ago. Cost me £40 and the guy had only just put new bearings in it.
