It seems I need a new prop shaft. I am getting a banging noise which varies with speed and goes away if I have a bit of acceleration on or braking. So it is the cruising along at constant speed. I understand GKN manufacturer, the OEM part, but can anyone recommend a lower cost pattern part that still reasonable quality? It’s a 2.2 diesel with manual gearbox made in 2007.

I don't believe there's an aftermarket alternative. They're not that expensive (relatively speaking) for what they are, but there are a few different types across various models and years, so you need to get the correct one.

Where's that from, LR?
They are available for under ½ that.

Yes, there are many aftermarket alternatives.

My car has done 100,000 miles so I don’t need a 100,000 mile prop shaft from Land Rover or one from GKN at £520. The car will be scrapped long before then. Equally, I don’t want to buy something which might go pop in 2 years so I was looking for a recommendation for a reasonable aftermarket option that’s nearer £300 than £500

I suspect that all those sold as aftermarket will be GKN, anyway. I bought an aftermarket for my D3, which came in a plain brown box. On opening it was clearly marked as GKN, which wasn't a surprise.
The propshaft on the Freelander 2 generally has a huge life, often as long as the engine as it's not doing any work most of the time.
Mine is still perfect at 135k, I'm expecting another 135k out of it. The only reason to scrap a FL2 is because the body has gone too rusty to pass the MOT. Mechanically they're pretty good, with examples still happy at over 300k and climbing.
