HELP! suddenly our 1993 diso 200tdi felt asif brakes locked. when jacked up rear wheels spin in opposite directions!!! Any ideas?? We were planning on selling it so hope not expensive? Does any one want to buy it? Doubtfull now!

That'll be the diff lock then! It's supposed to do that (spin in opp directions)!

Might be yer handbrake, if that's on then the drive from you turning one wheel will ttransfer into the other rear wheel spinning the other way.

Maybe, but more likely it means the handbrake was on when you jacked the car up - it works on the driveshaft so that won't have turned - i don;t know why your brakes locked, that's nothing to do with the wheels turning in opposite directions (which is normal)

new idea i heard from somone is that it seems that wheels are locked because problem with handbrake, been told need to remove driveshaft to get to rubber part that may have gone??!? supposed to be easy but not sure which end of driveshaft to get off, or the whole thing! any ideas?

i think someone's having yer on. jack it up and put it on stands, then get underneath and try and turn the h/brake drum. if your h/brake is off it should turn fairly easy.

Fine when used on thursday, then had an incident with jump leads...lots of smoke and some sparks! on sunday morning.seemed ok after this, started ok, went to drive off and will go for few metres then just jams up. seems to be getting worse. when jacked up all whells turn freely, will go into all gears.

will the wheels turn freely in BOTH directions?

Haven't tried that! My husbands just gone to work and i don't think i'll be able to push it! will get him to try tomorrow, what differance does that make anyway?

If you can push it with the transfer box in neutral the problem is with your gearbox. If not, as it sounds, the problem is with your handbrake. You want the problem to be with your handbrake!!

will the wheels turn freely in BOTH directions?

I guess the yes was to this question!

It won't make any difference what spins if both wheels on the same axle are off the ground, they will spin whether it's the gearbox, engine, (which you say it isn't), tranny box or handbrake. The only way they won't is if it's a brake, which probably wouldn't have this disastrous an effect!
