Freelander 2 (LR2) FL2 Rear Diff Seizure.

I know it's off topic, but there is a Freelander Crayford full convertible model too. Did a Crayford vehicle ever get made?? Rather fancy cutting roof off. :eek:

I had seen two Fl2 2.2 TD4 HSE one manual and other authomatic. one MY07 and other MY08.
Do you think is better manual with new clutch or authomatic?
Are there any known torque converter or solenoid faults?
Do yo know in what year LR installed haldex gen4 or from frame number?
Is the same rear differential in those years? Is there anny change in rear differentials during all of years of production?

Automatics drive better, but manuals are more fuel efficient. It doesn't seem to make a difficult as to diff failure.

From MY2009 or from frame/chassis No 9H000001.

All rear diffs are interchangeable, but from 2011 onwards, a larger pinion tail bearing was fitted. This didn't stop the bearings failing though, as the original small bearing was adequately sized to start with.
The issue is the pinion is set at too higher pre-load from the factory, and the lubrication to the tail bearing is pathetic.
 
So to draw a line under this issue now.
The rebuilt Evoque replacement diff is in, and the Haldex is serviced too.
It's now quiet and the Haldex is transferring drive the way it should, so hopefully that's the diff sorted for good.

I'll strip the seized diff, and post more pictures, when it's apart.

Yes well done. I must confess to being someone who never gives in. Almost like a dog with a new bone. Especially when it appears unsolvable.

Thanks Ali. I must admit that I'm aching now, I guess it's working seldom used muscles. :oops:

At least its done, although the quick test drive was done with much trepidation, but the diff seems fine.:)

The front brakes are a different matter however, so I'll get on those, once the new calipers arrive.

Well here's the odd thing. The misfire hasn't affected the way the engine runs, and before the diff seized, I had been using her as my daily driver.

It does misfire if I give her some serious beans, but I don't drive like that, so I don't get the misfire. I've also discovered the it runs on 4 from cold faster than it did, almost like whatever the issue was, is fixing itself.

I've even wondered if the fuel had gone off, which has been diluted by a subsequent fill?

I don't know, but I took it round the block after doing the diff, and she drove like a dream, although the front brakes judder, and the clutch is a little softer than I remember it, probably caused by me driving it off the road, with the back wheel dragging. :(

It could be bad diesel, maybe the diesel has some water in it, a mate of mine bought a 2.5DSE which i'm working on, the seller i'm pretty sure dumped a gallon of water in tank :mad:

it ran like shyte and still has a slight misfire draining the tank and putting £60 of super diesel and Millers cleaner sorted it out!

As for the clutch, I've done 3 of them and it isn't the easiest thing without a lift, a shame the FL2 seems to eat clutches..

I doubt a locked wheel would of killed a healthy one though.

Congratulations! I'm delighted to hear that you've got the diff' sorted now, you've done well John, especially rolling about working under a car, outside, in these freezing conditions. I'm going to recommend an old hydraulics tech remedy "BeeBee" - Beer + 'Buprofen, the latter might help with the aches and pains, the former will toast the job well done and maybe make you less concerned about any aches that the brufen doesn't remedy.

I'm hoping it's duff diesel. I've just put 20 litres in the tank, along with a bottle of Comma Diesel Magic, in preparation for the MOT at 13:00 today.

It still has a slight misfire, which is definitely worse when the engine is cold, and the throttle is pressed quickly.
Another fault manifested its after stopping for milk on route to the MOT center. This fault stopped the throttle from responding for a few seconds after I'd started the engine, but then seemed to go away again. :(

I did have to drive it off the road for some distance, with both rear wheels not turning, and presumably the Haldex was doing its best to turn the diff too.:eek:
The clutch definitely feels softer than it did, but hopefully it'll last for the next year or two.

It's done and is lovely and quiet from the rear now, actually it's just lovely and quiet to drive in general. It's definitely a much more refined vehicle compared to the FL1, but then it's a 10 year newer design. :)

Not been on forum for at least a month due to be poorly, great to hear you sorted out the rear diff, and the FL2 is more or less up to scratch, i will starting mine today after 5 weeks not being driven, hope all will be ok, will also look forward to the dedicated thread you are going to do.

The diff is quiet, so just this silly misfire to sort.
I'm hoping that once I've got the DIY out the way, I can look at the misfire again.

I'll do the diff rebuild thread, once I've time.
