admittedly, this is about as stupidly ridiculous as 1st world problems can get...but curious as to the forum's thoughts.

I have 2 Range Rovers, an '05 HSE and '95 Classic 25th anniv ed. I am considering trading one for a '92 Porsche 968 coupe. With 2 trucks that serve the same purpose, always thought having an old Classic and old coupe would be a well-rounded poor man's garage.

Wanted to shed the '05 but it is my long hauler for trips and it's usually what I drive when I have the kids for added safety. I drive both interchangeably throughout the week, so no real bias there. If I sold the '05 outright, I'd just buy the 968 or a 944 Turbo. And maybe on longer trips just rent a car to save the worry.

I was in the market for a D110 (and still am) but this offer came up. The 968 guy wants the Classic, not interested in the HSE. Question is, do I give up the awesomely awesome Classic for this (more practical) or take the less practical approach and shed the HSE?

Good questions...a couple of reasons why I lean to the 951 or 968. Cost is the big one, you can source them rather inexpensively still and find parts. Also I've always been a big fan of the front engine 50/50 weight distribution. Most importantly, they're far less common than a 911. Like our Classics, they say something a little different. Don't get me wrong, love the 911 turbos, and the C4's or the old Targa's...but prices keep me out of any of those irrespective of engine placement.

Ok the you are forgiven by Us the purists :p

I am heading to se my big bro in CT. Can't wait to drive his 89 911 again.

In the end if that's suits your pocket and you are happy with , that's what counts. We could not have avoided pushing you into 911 thoughts though :p

Good luck with your decision and make sure you get someone who knows about the car to give it a complete go over. Check its history as well.

Cheers.

Keep the Rangies

Hmm Porsche.

Unless 928 or 911 do not bother.

My previous cars have included a 1600 Chrysler Sunbeam with rally cam and twin carbs, rally springs, and a few big Vauxhalls including V6 Omegas. Read why I mentioned it.

4 cylinder Porsches

If you don't mind ancient Avenger based hot hatches making you look silly go ahead. Twisty A road they get to see odd looking tailgates go into the distance.

I have also driven a Boxster, went OK, but as I told the owner, it handled a bit like an old Rootes group hatch, not much faster than my then V6 Omega, and I did not feel at all bothered about jumping into my then own car. I once had another Boxster owner be rude about my car, wel mine had a bigger engine!

The 4 cylinder Porsches are just well made coupes not sport cars, boxster is OK.

But 928 and 911 are the ones you REALLY want.

I would LOVE a 928

I've had a 944 and now have a boxster and I love it. I would also love a 911 but cant afford one and when I drive to the speed limit my boxster is as fast as a 911 or even my Disco. Its bout how they feel to you and not to us. Buy what makes you happy. If you don't like it sell it and buy something else.

I like the 968 especially the turbo version for the extra performance but they are very rare. Arguably the 968 is nicer to drive than the 911 of the same era, the 50/50 weight distribution makes the handling a bit more predictable.

Sounds like if you want it with as little hassle as possible buy the 968 and trade the Classic. Longer term I'm not sure which will appreciate in value more, guess

The 968s a good car, better than the 944. Mates dad had a 944 turbo cab, in fact I think he still has it in Aberdeen. Anyway if it's a Clubsport, great track day starter car.

I had a 928 for a few month (couldn't afford to run it longer) while I was at college, did s deal with my uncle for it. It was an S1 that had been in a shunt but been upgraded with S4 GTS front and rear inc spoiler. Was a brute of a big bus. Loved it but it drank petrol like beer at a stag party. The checkered seats were an acquired taste as was the blue dashboard.

You could ask for a long weekend swap and see how it goes???

I think the Range Rovers are at the top of the food chain for my case having younger children and two grand children I would keep the rovers!!! Personally Z-type jaguar would be a great addition to my collection.!!!

Would never consider anything not diesel, but each to their own :)

Until the regs change and diesel is condemned. I love my big twin turbo diesels but at some point they will be impacted by emissions . In fact my wife's car now needs AdBlue additive to keep it running (car goes into limp mode without it) so it starting!!

I agree about the 928, a V8 beast would be nice. Finding a manual 928 is about as rare as a turbo 968 though. And prices for anything later model than an '88 or '89 are holding high. If the 968 happened, maybe I could one day turbo it and boost BHP to a respectable amount and still get 30mpgs.

side note: wife and kids were not happy at all when I brought this up. My 7 yr old son loves all cars but immediately said "NO! No way you can sell the old truck...sell the new one!" Smart man.
