I have been informed that LAND-ROVERS' and especially RANGE-ROVERS' are renowned for having severe "OVER-HEATING PROBLEMS"! My own FIRST EXPERIENCE came when I purchased my own after the previous owner had given up on his "P38" having had the "Head-skimmed and having spent in excess of £1,000 (I WAS TOLD BY A RELIABLE SOURCE) he AUCTIONED it on Ebay which is where I come in HAVING WON IT FOR £500 which is very close to the minimum price that I should expect to buy it for as quoted by the LAND-ROVER web-site! Prior to bidding for it, I researched LAND-ROVERS' and RANGE-ROVERS' OVER-HEATING PROBLEMS with the majority of problems occurring from "Badly Bled Water-Based Liquid-Cooling Systems"! The Cylinder-Head has recently been "Skimmed" - I'm not certain if anything else has been done on the Land-Rover / BMW Engine?

I'm a bit of a mechanic myself, having trained and worked in the Aviation Industry as an Aviation Gearbox Technician servicing "Dowty-Rotol Gearboxes" for AEM, a Ramsgate based company. My auto experience comes as very much a 55 year "Hands-on" motorcycle rider-owner and car driver-owner. Naturally I have been helped out immensely by SKY Televisions Dave Channel - "Wheeler-Dealers" with Mike Brewer and Ed China. I specifically remember Ed China introducing us to "Waterless Coolant for Classic Cars and in particular those suffering from "overheating problems"! I believe the episode was on a white classic sports car, it's make I'm afraid I cannot remember. Anyway, after a little bit of delving on the internet.I found the product and purchased 12 Litres of Evans Waterless Coolant along with 5 Litres of Evans Flushing Liquid. So far it seems to have done the trick as I was forced to leave my "P38" where I had collected it from in a Repair Garage in RUGBY. It had overheated on BRITAIN'S TRULY HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR (AT THE TIME) FRIDAY 25TH of MAY 2018 and that day the RAC were so busy that their telephones were going unanswered due to their systems becoming totaly overloaded because literally thousands of cars around our country were all overheating, each one becoming so hot that "Roast Dinners could be cooked inside the engine bay"! The problem with my Range-Rover was truly exasperated when the "TOP-HOSE" WAS DESTROYED BY IMMENSE WATER-PRESSURE BUILD-UP DUE TO OVERHEATING EVEN FASTER THAN IT COULD ON A COLD DAY!

I had been told very accurately that I must not allow my Range-Rover to run for more than 10-12 minutes as it “Boils-Over” in between 15-20 minutes and I can only take it home to RAMSGATE if I use a car towing-Trailer. If not I could risk destroying the BMW engine. As I was a Member of the RAC I thought that if I first bleed the system properly there would be a chance, that if I got on the way she, (and here I refer not to my wife as “Her Indoors” but my newly purchased P38 Range-Rover) would hopefully surpass all previous events and drive her all of the 299 miles back home to RAMSGATE without any untoward events. I could then replace the vehicle’s water-based coolant for the EVANS non-water-based coolant which will hopefully solve all of this lovely old lady’s problems!

However, Friday 25th May should have been labelled truly as a “VERY BLACK FRIDAY” as “me Bleeding the Range-Rover’s water based cooling system had little or no effect at all . . . . . “ The Top-Hose on the Radiator BLEW-APART leaving a gaping hole in it”. I only found this out on the following Monday or Tuesday 28th/29th May whn the RAC had managed to send someone to view my Range-Rover P38 for me! Because the previous Friday when it ALL KICKED OFF and neither my friend Ray or myself just could-not raise the RAC even though we were still trying to either HOLD-ONTO or re-telephoning the RAC constantly in the end causing both our MOBILE PHONES BATTERIES TO DIE . . . . . . . */ /&

At that point I went to see the Director of the garage who had kindly acted as storage Host for the previous owner of my vehicle and had kindly allowed me to borrow his jump start equipment as the vehicle’s battery was completely dead-on-my-arrival . . . . . . . . . /* /&

I told him of my miss-fortune and asked if I could leave it with him in his garage just as the previous owner did and added that I will try and get the RAC to come and view it and perhaps replace the top-hose for me and get it over it’s ongoing problem until I could get it back home to RAMSGATE where I would deploy my time completely restoring it to it’s former self and glory.

The Garage Director was really great about it and since then I have purchased and had transported to him 12 LITRES of EVANS NON-WATER-BASED COLLANT and 5 LITRES of their EVANS – FLUSHING COOLANT which is specifically utilised to FLUSH the COMPLETE COOLING SYSTEM and INTERNAL HEATING SYSTEM OF ALL SIGNS OF WATER-BASED COOLANT READY FOR the

* TRANSFER OVER TO THE “EVANS NON-WATER BASED COOLANT”

Once this had been achieved the vehicle needed a new MOT as the previous MOT had expired at the end of MAY 2018. I had previously INSURED it and paid for the vehicle tax on a DIRECT-DEBIT back-dated to the 1st MAY 2018 as I had hoped that I would have been able to drive it home on this very negative eventful day of the 28TH MAY 2018. (However even to this day 15TH AUGUST 2018 – I have only driven it for approximately 50 feet to the external compound of the garage).

N.B. Since the garage has changed over from "Water-Based Cooling" to "The EVANS Non Water-Based COOLING FLUID" the engine is able to withstand working whilst stationary and an MOT has been achieved . . but the ENGINE TEMPERATURE GAUGE GOES ALL OF THE WAY TO "H" ON" IDLE TICK-OVER"
HOWEVER, WHEN THE ENGINE IS "RUN-UP AND HELD ON e.g. 2,000 RPM" THE TEMPERATURE IMMEDIATELY RETURNS TO "NORMAL" . . . . . ANY IDEAS PLEASE . . . . . .?

As a disabled person caused by spinal injuries due to an RTA on 6th December 1982 by a speeding and accelerating G.P. who was rushing home for his evening meal, I think that someone out there must have it in for me and trying to really make me suffer for living with the extent of my injuries for over 20 years before being correctly diagnosed and recorded with numerous fractures in my neck at C1/C2, C3/C4, C5/C6 and spine at L2/L3, L5/S1. The Range-Rover “P38” was to ensure that I can be fully mobile 365/366 days per year even on my actual Birthday. I am aged 70 - the same age as the National Health. I was an only child - born at 10.30am on Sunday the 29th February 1948 to my wonderful late parents Jessie and Joseph Sacks. My mother was the Book-Keeper for the famous J. Arthur Rank and his Film and Theatre Empire, my father had very poor sight and was practically Blind but held the position of Head of Staff for the Regal Cinema in Ilford, Essex. They met in 1942 during the second world war. My mother had come over from Head-Office to Audit the cinema’s accounts and my dad took on the responsibility of being a “Fire-Watcher” on top of the Regal Cinema, Ilford, Essex. “A Fire-Watcher with poor sight seeing most probably farther than I had driven my lovely dark-blue P38 Range-Rover” . . . .?

We moved to the very busy Cliftonville, which was in the posh area of Margate, Kent in 1952 when I was 4 years old. My parents opened up a Restaurant and small Hotel. I am reminded of which whenever “FawtyTowers” comes onto our screens! If any of my readers can help with ideas - then please do not hesitate to get in touch with me ?
