Question: Is 62 mph a normal max speed?

Spec: 1991 D90 200TDI, lt77, BW tcase, stock axle gears, 245/75r16.

Just bought. I don't have a tach, yet. On the way home it felt like the old girl was going to blow. Thank you for the input.

bw tcase,sounds more like a 1.667 lt230
 
Revs, plenty of power. I thought the same on the transfer case, but the plate on the case says borg warner 3561 and no dif lock.

I have a feeling I need to look at the injection timing and see if it is off.
 
in which case it will be 1.222 so in theory good for 100mph bar wind resistance, though diffs could be none std depends on why your speed limited ie gearing or power
 
I am going to spin tires to get a rough estimate of ratio. Thank you guys for help. I will let you know my findings once I figure it out.
 
If the injection timing is off the engine will not rev through its full range. It is the only logical starting point that I can see. If someone has an idea I would be greatful.

it sounded like you were describing a gearing issue but if you're saying it's a top end power issue it could be a host of things.

Blocked air filter, restricted fueling (filter, injection pump diaphragm split, badly tweeked pump), turbo boost, split hoses, knackered injectors and probably a load of other stuff I haven't learnt to worry about yet

I just bought it yesturday from the original owner. The head was repaced three months ago and all new injectors. I am trying to convince myself that this will not be a nightmare.

I have a 110, 200 tdi all standard other than a Salisbury front axle, will happily cruise at 70 mph all day and all night. Sounds like yours has been down geared somewhere along the line. I was under the impression Borg Warner boxes were only fitted to Range Rovers.

My 1991 D90 also does not like to cruise very fast on the highway. Anymore than 60mph and the revs seem high.

1991 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90
ENGINE: 2.5 liter 4 cyl 200 TDI
TRANSMISSION: LT77 5 speed.
TRANSFER CASE: HRC2202, 4:10 RATIO
 
My 300 tdi 90 will sit at 60mph all day, 70+ sounds like its going to throw a piston out,

Standard ratio diffs and defender transfer box
 
60 is all my 110 200tdi conversion will do, but that's mostly because I haven't got round to sorting out the turbo-intercooler hose that's being constricted by alternator after the transplant, I'm hoping it's going to do a bit more when it's sorted, or at least not feel like she'll blow up!
