Afternoon all,

My PAS fluid looks like it's been in there since the day dot, so I'm going to change it this week.

Now, I was wondering - although not overly expensive to buy, could I use truck PAS Fluid? The reason I ask is that I work in the haulage industry and luckily have access to all the fleet maintenance facilities. This includes tools, pit access, fluids , oils etc etc. Plus I'm a tight git, and this could save me £20 - £30.:p

Thoughts?

PS: no ACE in my D2.

not a issue if the same specs. Oh and 10w hydraulic oil works also, if you got a leaky seal

.... provided you are certain there'll never be below -10*C over night cos then if it's not cold climate fluid the pump and box might suffer

I live in Cornwall. Apart from the odd occasion where you have to scrape the windscreen in the morning, there's not much in the way of frost down here.

The correct fluid is ATF is it not, mine has never been changed, nether was the PS fluid in my previous LR, it's not in any service scheduled I've seen.

Well, I'm going to change it anyway. I don't like the look if it. I want it to be pink, the same colour as my D2. :p

Although there isn't a published service interval, I think you are wise to change it. I change mine every few years. I always use ATF, though, and in the power steering on the tractor.
Do you know what the truck fluid is, mineral or vegetable oil?

Only for official data accuracy: LR recommendation for Europe market is cold climate fluid STC50519, ATF is recommended only for NAS specs with a note to not be used where the temp can go below -20*C (not the case for UK, though with all the climateric oddities lately you never know:cool:)

A subject that's already been done to death by owners but,.
LR recommending a product with "cold climate" in its name suggests having found an issue, and so to overcome it by saying use this stuff. Is the D2 PAS one of the 700 improvements the D2 has on the D1, is it that different? What I've seen they look the same.
They could have made up their mind as the link to a PDF copy page 2 shows both fluids can be used. http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...c763c85a2240d&attachmentid=99086&d=1307355311

That document is for Td5 Defender not D2(the D2 doesnt have swivel pin housings ;))... that's why i bolded official to not have a debate on what CAN be used and what not, but for accuracy again, ATF is red and pas cold climate is green like the LR badge :)

AMOF , keeping this within pure technical limits the D2 PAS pump has a flow rate of 0.5 l/m greater at the nominal delivery pressure than the D1 and Defender pumps, maybe that's why it needs different fluid too... also i'm not gonna understand ever why for a few quid savings on less than 2l of fluid to use other than what the builder recommends which must be changed more often

not saying cold climate fluid isnt bettter but how did they mange with the disco 1, the pump and box are basically the same

i dont know that, what i know is that mine is still on the original pump amd box at 170K miles and used only the green cold climate stuff which was changed once... we have often below -20C in the winter here ... only a statistic would be relevant how many pump or box failures have had those who used other fluids in such climate

we rarely have severe cold 2010 was the last really cold winter i remember, i can see that lubricants improve over time ,and its obvious most lr pas boxes eventually leak ,which is usually the effects of water and dirt eroding the shaft and seal where seal locates ,im all for using better lubricants ,but not so keen on increasing the mileage before changing, oil might last but you cant keep any system clean

Never changed mine, 305k miles and still goes in the right direction ! Life can be difficult enough with a D2 without trying to find non existent problems.

see James(and others) ... that's a relevant example of what CAN be done eventually without any obvious damage(if some luck is involved too) which doesnt mean it's OK this way  , exactly like when i insisted for dedicated PD/EUI 5w oil in the Td5 and others said they've used all kind of cheap tractor 10w mineral oils in it for years without probs , or ATF in the ACE, etc. :)

i would never say changing oil was finding non existant problems ,more preventative
Agree completely. Stands to reason that any mineral fluid will degrade and pick up water over time. The degraded oil and water will go round the system causing damage, unless removed and replaced with clean.
Cant see that changing oil will ever do any harm.
