Series 2 Picture request - chassis - rear shock mount

G'day Folks,

Mine is a bit rusty =>



I think it is a simple affair but I'm not 100% sure how the mount for the rear shock absorbers is meant to be. I've hunted about for a replacement source but it looks like I'll have to be welding my own...

...thing is, I'd like to know what it is meant to look like before I start to use the force.

If anyone has a picture (of the upper bit not shown clearly in the picture above) that would be very helpful.

Thanks for the picture. That looks very different from my 109 inch series 2a though.

I think I'll take a few pictures of the area I'm trying to get to grips with and see if a bit of calm though will help!

Your fixing point looks different from the rear chassis of a S3. Mine's got a hole through the chassis which is for the top bolt which holds the top of the shock absorbers. It's secured with a large washer and bolt torqued to 34.

The series 3 chassis does indeed look very different.

This might be a station wagon thing though - I'm not sure - I'll have a hunt about and see if I can clear it up.

Well yes but perhaps not in the way you mean!

The factory fitted longer shocks as standard on the LWB station wagons. This isn't a farmer's modification or something like that the shape of the chassis with these jutting out bits for the shock absorbers are clearly shown in the parts catalogue (unfortunately they are part of the chassis and don't have a separate part number).

Sounds like you have a need to fabricate a bespoke fitting. Curious one.

Is it not the difference between a SWB and a LWB!
ie SWB is the new half chassis OP has a long wheel base.

I thought so to. But I'm leaning towards a difference between series 2 and series 3.

I've been looking on the Richards chassis site for clues and some difference are shown but not this rather obvious one so I'm not 100% sure yet.

Yep I think so too. It seems to consist of two side straps that are welded to the chassis and a cylindrical bit up top and perhaps a gusset on the forward facing side back down onto the chassis rail - this bit seems to be in some pictures but no in others...

This video pans past your straps several times. I'm sure that either Duncan or Alastair at Richards will sell you the straps and pins - they're really good guys.

I heard from someone else that they weren't happy to sell these parts - still there's no harm in asking politely is there?

That's interesting. I didn't know that LWB rear shocker mountings are different. I used to own one years ago but never had to investigate that part of the landy. Probably just as well cos it was a wreck.

I started a thread just like this one on the series 2 club forum and as a result I've been measuring and drawing pictures of the rust I've got.

This make up has not been confirmed - do not use it yet!

This is just a stumbling little step towards the answer - but I thought I'd keep you all on this side of the water in the loop...

I've just got a load of measurements from kind chap (in France) over on the series 2 forum which I'm about to check with the measurements I've made. I'll post 'em up when done...

I didn't know longer shocks were fitted to 109 station wagons. I was about to order some for mine but the ad says suitable for 109 and doesn't mention station wagons. I wonder why they are longer.

Hi Stretch, I am in the same situation as you where my 109, rusted out its rear shock absorber mounts and I can't find which stock tubing has been used (OD and ID)? Did you have any luck sourcing the stock for your project? If so would you be kind enough to post the dimensions? Thanks

My LWB ex mil looks simiar - mine had rusted on one side so I got a local fab shop to cut out the corrosion and weld in a new plate. I think damp gets under the straps where the holes are. The shock mount looks ok - how does it clean up?

This was typical "me planning further ahead than it was likely I'd get round to doing anything with the knowledge"

I have gotten nowhere with this.

The dimensions shown above are not very good - do not use!

I asked the same question on the series 2 club forum and I got a load of really good information. I'll log into that forum and try and find the gen for you (takes a long time because that forum's search function is total and utter ham shank)

I'll be back
