Petrol Pump may need replacing INSPECTION HOLE HELP

Morning

I have just had some problems with my Rangie.

Started up and it coughed burped and farted I could hardly here it as with

the windows shut it was more like a judder. Turned off and on again and

it did the same then died. Then it just turned over. So turned over with

pedal down about an inch, and the breakdown guy put some squirt in or

down by the air intake just where I put my Air Filter. He sprayed it into the

black waffle like covered hole. The car then did actually manage to

coughed burped and farted and kind of wanted to start, but the

breakdown guy said its your Petrol Pump.


Had sort of similar 2 weeks ago, when a little low on petrol, although the

petrol light was not on yet so had about 40-50 miles in tank. Which I

chucked 5 litres of petrol in and revved it through and had no problems

thereafter.


Here endith the story now for the questions lol.

Q1. Is there such thing as an inspection hole to check pump and test pump

Q2 If so could I get to the filter and /check/change/clean/replace/

Q3 If so would there be room to add some power to pump and test, to

confirm either way.

Just to save 1.5 hour labour costs I would guess, and to save money if its

only the filter, As I presume its like a hoover filer thing and could have

dragged up some crap from two weeks ago.


ANY HELP PEEPS IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

OR If you read the rest of my other threads you probably all say scrap the

car lol

Change in-line filter first at least to eliminate. SaintV8 has done pump so he's your man to assist. Check out 'how to' section for a run down regarding procedure.
 
Did my intank pump a few weeks back and there is no "inspection hole" you have to cut one into the boot floor! There is a how to on this but its not for the faint harted as you have to take an angle grinder to the floor
some carefull mesuring then mesure again a bit of dutch courage and hole was cut in all of 30mins plus a £50pump and job was done (abit like you were at £592)

you talking about a P38 or L322 here ?

used to cut hole in floor years ago when I had p38s piece of cake also a rover pump from scrappy fits for £10;) but mines a l322 its a totally different ball game & im not really bothered what it costs as long as its right afterall its just another receipt to go with the rest:)

Ah yea dint realise was a l322 thought it was p38
thats main reason I wont have one! Everything so dam expensive when it dont need to be!

Not really? I picked up an oem pump for £155 delivered. And fuel filter/ pressure regulator for £25

Iv found that if you shop around, then the parts are more than reasonable for the type of vehicle. And not too difficult to work on if you don't mind having a go

+3 & forgot to mention it was picked up from where I broke down and dropped off 25 miles away to the only range rover specialist I trust

Right. I did my fuel filter today (what a pig)
And my fuel pump....... Which I fcuked up :(

Totally my fault though.

When your taking the pump out the tank as per saints thread, I really can't stress enough how gentle you have to be. I was wiggling and pulling and being gentle and then crack f**kity f**k. Not gentle enough...
I snapped the fuel sender clean off the pump housing :mad:

So the £160 internal pump is now a full pump at £400 :( couldn't find anyone who sold just the sender unit separately, must be able to get it somewhere though.
Found the aux sender, but not that main level sender :( o well

Ah sh!t, sorry bud - you do have to be very careful with a lot of wiggling and thought to ensure you don't catch the sender on the aperture....

You can now very carefully lift the pump from the tank, have a bucket ready as the unit will be filled with about a pint or so of fuel. Be cautious of the very delicate looking level sensor and the venturi pipe, so when you lift it out, gentle wiggling and tilting is needed to get it out of the hatch – at first it looks like it won’t fit through the hole with the white collar and seal in the way, but with patience and forethought you can get it out – I did!!

Sorry mate!

No need to apologise ant! Not your fault, your write up said it was tight and had to be gentle. I knew I needed to be careful, but while I was concentrating on wiggling past the lip on the pump I totally forgot about the level sender.

Not sue if mine had gone brittle though as I didn't think I put much pressure on it
