H@ve you tried reversing @ t@d n pulling the c@ble.

Sounds like its jammed on, so to try and release with diagnostics is not going to work otherwise the normal switch would have done it.

The emergency release cable needs a fair bit of pressure/effort to release apparently, You did have a srewdriver/bar through the loop cos its needed. I would have another go at that and get some anger out of your system:D.

If that dosent get it I have heard people cut the actual cable to the wheel.

When they are working they need checking/adjusting annually, then strip and clean/lube every 2 or 3 years.
I think its time you got rid?

Yea need to fix it really otherwise worth nothing so there’s no diy fix here or steps to take ?

If you cant get it released, then you can get the "box of magic" off and have a look inside, but its usually (as it seems) lack of maintenance/adjustments.
They then seem to damage the internals of the assembly when over stretched

So unless you can release the brake with the emergency cable you are going to end up damaging something in the process, and probably cant tell till you get it off.
Sort of a catch 22:(

So if it doesn’t pull by the cable , then il have to cut cable or something , how much further should I pull the cable I’ve had about 2 inch and feels like something break if keep pulling ?

What have you got to lose? Thats actually the idea you need to break the connection and if its over wound it could be even harder, maybe.
It needs a lot of effort, thats all I know never had to actually do it;).

Everything is diy able, if you have the will:p:D.
The issue are part availability as apposed to buying the whole box, as am sure it isn’t cheap.
The box itself is not the easiest to get to, tucked up on top of the rear subframe behind the axle, I believe.
Secondhand probably available.

Ok managed to get the cable pulled tool out the centre bit around gear selected so could get a better pull on it , bloody does take some effort , so what’s next if I try the hand brake I get the loud squeeling on looking on other forums if mentions that it may just need adjusting in the module and the shoes replacing adjusting if seized etc does this make any sense ?

Don’t bother with trying the button the mech has jammed out, by pulling the cable you have just disconnected the insides which releases tension on the cables.
The black box will probably still need to be got out and see if you can recover what’s inside.
Just use park as the handbrake for now, try to park on level ground.

It’s definitely in need of adjustment but you need to get in the box to un jam it.

If I remember @Datatek did some investigative work/pics of what’s in the box.
@gstuart may have some other words to help.

Yea I’m going to get car up on stands replace and adjust shoes , and get to the module and open it up and hopefully can free it and wind it back , fingers crossed it’s that and nothing has broken

Keep us posted to what you find please:).

Will do , do you know if the bolts on the rear wheel hubs the ones on the behind to access shoes are easily accessible with a bar to lever the bolts as the fronts where so tight but at least could turn the wheels for more leverage ?

To access the epb shoes you need to remove,
fuse first and foremost
wheels
caliper
caliper carrier
brake disc
and all will be revealed

If you look through the wheel arch you can see the epb module, spare wheel needs to come out for access.

Hi will the handbrake go into service mode try ignition on press handbrake off and foot pedal same time then ignition off while holding both brakes pulling the emergency release takes quite a effort your fighting tension, service kits are available they usually strip the gears due to needing adjustment or something seizing doable yourself but like everything on a D3 is a challenge lets say

Thanks for all help , think it’s going to be a take time job lol , not the most confident but reading all the reply’s in here gives a little hope , so am I right in thinking , this order ….replace shoes first and adjust then whilst wheels off etc go to the epb module undo cover and hopefully unjam/rewind and reattach emergency cable and then hope for the best, or do I do module first ?

I would do the black box first,
After proper adjustment you may not need new shoes.
But I dont know if you have to release the cables at the wheels to get the box out if so then you may as well fit new shoes.

Let me look at my L322 files see what I can find, its basically the same.

Ok it appears the cables can be removed from the box, BUT in the files it mentions to remove actuator box and cables at the wheels. And "screwing" the cable on/off,
So it sounds like it needs releasing at the wheel before the cable can be removed from the actuator. Which would mean wheels and discs off with all the other bits that go with it.

On the l322 its a right faff to get the actuator out, I can post the file but it may be different on the D3 so dont want to confuse or send you off on the wrong path,
