EPM what a nightmare..!!

The Electronic Parking Module has stuck on and will not release….the emergency pull cable does not work either….any idea how I can disengage this damn parking brake to then be able to move the jeep to a garage for a new module to be fitted….does anyone know if there is a place that offers a service to disengage these?
It’s a 2010 Range Rover Sport down in South Wales….will a diagnostic tool reset it?

Ooer, you can try with a daig tool but if it's well and truly buggered it may be possible to lift one end and put a bogey under one axle and tow it. One scenario is to cut the handbrake cables at the wheel and let the brake off. The new module should come with new cables or it should depending on the supplier. The module can be reset as long as the gears aren't chewed. There are a few rebuilt units available as well.

How hard did you pull the cable?
It takes some effort.

If it releases with the cable and then adjusted correctly it will reset itself, if the gears aren’t fubar.

Yep I have pulled the release cable as high as it can go and it does not release…doesn’t sound promising does it ….nightmare..!!

It needs a screwdriver/bar through the loop and both hands.

we have had it before where peeps have just not pulled hard enough.

I put some electrical cord looped through the pull eye and pulled it up as hard and high as it would physically go ….as you say a little surprised it would not release as what’s the point of it otherwise which suggested to be something isn’t right inside the PCM itself?….also thinking of taking the wheels off to see if there’s anything obvious there that could make the parking brake release.?

Taking the wheels of will revile nothing.
Do you get any messages on the dash.

Just when I try to release it screeches like a bitch (it’s an awful noise..!) it doesn’t release and then I get a parking brake fault message appear and think the dashboard light stays on red….if I leave it for sometime and start the car no warning lights or anything you would not know there was an issue until you push the dreaded brake release and the screech returns…!!!

Sounds like the gears are knackered and it’s all been overstretched.
If you can’t pull and break the emergency release then really the only way to release it is to cut the cables.

Its not gonna be a cheap repair, Did I say you are not pulling hard enough on the cable .

Yep think it’s a cut job just wondered if there were some tricks I didn’t know about to get the release…from what I can see its a nasty job too to change the PBM but until I can get the cable released I can’t move to a garage and up on the ramps to know

All I can say is yank on the emergency release a lot first you may get lucky.
what do you have to lose or break anymore.

Exactly how is that emergency release “supposed” to work?…..will I hear a distinct noise if it does happen?

Search EPB might give better results here as there have been many discussions about it.which will show the workings.

I don’t know what happens but would expect it to be hard then go slack for a bit.

Another "fine feature" on JLR vehicles.
Tried a bar thru a common point in the linkage and a "shock" with a really big sledgehammer?
Sometimes it's the a "shock-load" that frees stuff up rather than a long-pull (a bit like an impact driver does).

On the back wheels is the parking brake system separate to the pedal brake….is it different shoes or something?

the EPB shoes sit inside the rear disc, have enclosed a picture where u can see the space where the shoes would go

so pads only come on via the brake pedal , EPB shoes only come on via the handbrake switch

plse first check main fuse box in the engine bay / FL8 fuse 30A (pink Fuse)

there is a way to turn the EPB module off without diagnostics but doesn’t release the shoes if there stuck on via the cables

quick check if u haven’t already is looking on the back of the brake disc guards to see if the handbrake cables are very tight or loose

quick note of caution when u try the emergency cable again plse be careful as sometime it can snap

But , at the end of the day and not wishing to sound rude but if ur not mechanically minded and going to get the garage to do the work it might be best for them to simply recover it on a flat bed , just get them to put Dollie’s under the wheels for ease of pulling it onto the lorry

alas if a whole new EPB and cables are required u won’t get much change out of £1000 +

If you have tried all other options, try puttng the auto box into neutral instead of park before attempting to unlock. Then move to park and then back to neutral a few times.
We had a similar issue yesterday after fitting new drivers side window and central locking cluster. When I applied the parking brake while the vehicle was 'creeping' forward while parking up....everything went into 'dead' mode, no crank, no nothing and I feared the worst.
But with a lot of patience and NO panic it resolved itself
