MOT re test @ 2pm tomorrow, only concern i really have now is she's been blowing grey smoke for some time and i don't want her to fail on the smoke test, i read somewhere taking her for a good run before the test helps reduce smoke output, is this true?

I'd like to say i will do the tappet clearances before the test as it is on my ' to do ' list, but chances are it wont happen.

Any tips appreciated :D

SVO and get the engine hot

Re test was at 2, unfortunately i was at the side of the A380 trying to hammer the exhaust manifold back together after a bolt sheared and it fell off

Retest tomorrow...

I've removed the turbo from the manifold, ive also removed the 4 bolts that I assume hold the intake side of the turbo from the exhaust side, should it now come apart?

I wanted to check the seal as I have an awful lot of oil in the intake side and I can only assume its the seal in the turbo shaft doing this.

The actual turbo or manifold?

Turbo

Here's a pic:

After cleaning the soot off, it has 3 cracks running across and one of them goes all the way through as it can be seen on the other side ( which is inside the bit that comes off the manifold.

Also the play in the turbo fins is about the same as the gearstick in the cab, in fact i'm surprised it hasn't self destructed by now

The amount of oil in it can be seen in these pics, i know it's not unusual to have some oil, but this takes the proverbial

Had enough for tonight, will get back on it tomorrow morning.

Jesus mate...thats been an arse of a motor...

To be fair the turbo and manifold were off the 19J so i imagine the cracks were due to heat stress when it was on that, but who knows.

I keep meaning to grab a 200Tdi defender turbo n manifold, but everytime i got cash to get one, ebay's empty :(

got a disco turbo but dont know if it'll fit a 19j manifiold

I'm not sure either, i doubt it as the disco turbo's are mounted down the side so i imagine the manifold output is different but if the price is right then i can look into upgrading the manifold to either a disco one and change the downpipe as well, how much did you have in mind for the turbo?
