coming back from hospital tonight (after becoming a dad) changed down into 2nd gear at top of drive, and i seem to have 'lost' 2nd gear, when i say lost alot of the time it pops out when you place it in, then odd occasion itll grind in and stay in....... whasts the diagnosis and how much roughly is a recon box???? i.e. service exchange
this to add to the ticking sound from the front o/s wheel area (which im led to beleive is the pads floating around)

Congrats on the baby mate. I had same issue with my gearbox a few weeks ago, I managed to pick up a good secondhand box and transfer box for £170. Think recons are £300 - £350.

Good un with the new addition :D ,future landy pilot ?. Recon gear boxes are around 350 to 400 around our way but you never know, you may find one cheaper . Good hunting:).

Well I've driven in this morn and it seems to be ok, only vague 1nce on a roundabout and fine changing down, a mate has pointed out it could be the linkages a plate in particular which breaks and needs tacking so at somepoint I'll have a quick gander and the. Assess if I need a new box should be sometime this week inbetween changing nappys

Strip the centre console out and get to the top of the gearbox, bias plate might be broken. Search on the forum, there's a few articles about it.

Yeah, bias plate bust on my 1st box, I bought a new bias plate and 2 new bias springs from www.lrseries.com, was only £12 or something delivered. Make sure you get it set up right and test drive it before you reassemble the centre console as it's a ballache to keep drilling the rivots out and then puttin new ones in.

Congratulations mate!

When this happened to me it was the box that was fooked! and that bloody clicking from the front pads drives you mad, I tried everything and found that a slightly stiffer spring inbetween the pads on the pin retainers cured the problem!
