Thanks to some helpful advice on my recent laning trip, I now know how to access the rear floor without butchering the carpet

Behold!

Amazing that it's almost as it left the factory, 12/13 years ago.....apart from the fuel pump inspection panel!! Bloody hell, what a rusty mess. 4 out of the 6 screws move, the other two don't. I'll try an impact driver on them before cutting a slot in the heads. If that fails then angle grinder time :clap2:

So, should I wire brush and hammerite the panel? Or should I get a new one? My local LR dealership has them priced at £26-odd for the panel and £3.50 for the seal. It won't break the bank, but I do have plenty of hammerite!!

I will admit to butchering the carpet on my last D2 when I replaced the fuel pump, I used a new stanley blade and cut it down the middle. When I put it back you would never have known it was cut.

On my current D2, the fuel pump was replaced just before I had it. The guy had done exactly as I had done and made a clean cut down the middle. Had I not been told there's no way I would have known it was cut.

The moral here is (if you must), use a brand new stanley blade and a steel edge for a straight line.

Or..... do it correctly as Difflock did!

afraid I`m gonna have to let the side down.
when I had fuel pump sender issues. I took my time and started to cut round the outside.
only problem was. it was saturated due to the infamous sun roof leak.
so took the whole rear carpet out and now got rubber mats.
its a bit of a work horse so not a major issue.

I just pulled my carpet up its only just the very edge of the carpet under the trim and used a big flat blade screw driver to push it down back under the trim

Kin ell the amount of time you were discussing it you could have had it out, brushed up and painted!

Do NOT buy a new one it's a waste of monies!

Get rid of the carpet and spend the monies on diesel to go greenlaning, everyone's a winner :D

OOPS!

Got a new one, the old one was quite shocking, I have plenty of diesel, I want to keep the carpet seeing as the Disco has quite a tidy interior :D

I did unbolt the rear pair of hoops on the floor (tie-down eyelets??) and took the wire brush & hammerite to them ;) They'd rusted quite badly, but not the floor surprisingly!

There was a bit of diesel on top of the tank, but I could not see any of the pipes leaking. I'm convinced the excess diesel was down to me and my friend overfilling the tank via a jerry can a couple of weeks back (diesel doesn't evaporate quickly!); it went up the filler neck and then was gushing out from around the top of the tank. Must have left a good half pint on the floor! I'm guessing a vent pipe runs close to the top of the tank :censored: (off to see if RAVE has any diagrams)

I picked a cover up at Peterbog for £1.50. Far from perfect but better than my existing one - took a wire brush to it, then a coat of hammerite and its good to go ;)

NB I'm also a tight Welshman :D

Here's a couple of pics. Having looked at RAVE, there is indeed a breather running across the top of the tanks so I reckon it's entirely possible that's where the diesel I found around the pump housing had come from. This is after I'd wiped it up a bit:

New plate good to go:

EDIT: FFS! I flipped this in p'bucket, but it's still upside down here :(

My jap import 300tdi has an excellent dry floor.Only after it took 3 days to dry out the foam backing. I reckoned that the inspection plate attracted condensation which spread all over.
Since then I put an entire newspaper over the plate and this absorbs any water.
In the last 3 years every 6 weeks I inspect plate and it is always dry. Just my tuppence worth, but anything to stop rust. Waiting on s Disco 2 coming and will check plate when it comes.

Hmm. I'd better remove the plastic bag I put under there to stop the rusty crap on on the back of the carpet from attacking the panel. Bits of rust had embedded themselves in the foam backing.
