Noisy tappet

I've had a noisy tappet on my 95 2.5 DSE P38 for over a year (20,000 miles).

Having just spent a small fortune on a gearbox and clutch I don't want to attend to it now.

Am I likely to get big problems soon?

And how big a job is it to sort?
