Hello. We were driving 90km/h on a motorway and exited to a 60km/h road, car peeped, said gearbox fault and went into limp mode. Upon restarting it, it drives normally. We're on a road trip across Europe and driving for 5-6 hours daily with breaks. The car in question is a RR P38 automatic 2.5 diesel 1999.

Does anyone know what could cause this? We still have many days to drive before reaching our destination. Currently in Poland, it's friday and I really don't feel like getting stuck here to do some major gearbox work.
Gearbox is full of oil, battery is good, the weather is not hot at all (10C). I have noticed in the past months that the gearbox makes a slight grinding noise upon reversing, don't know if that's related. I'll have it looked at as soon as we reach our destination! Any ideas though? Thanks!

Sounds like it could be the gearbox overheating assuming that it does actually have enough oil in there. Check the gearbox oil cooler is not blocked with mud etc and maybe check the cooling fan.

There may be a fan on the rad,
if you've got fog lamps then it should have a fan to help cool it.
Oil level checked when engine running?
No leaks around the box, rad or piping?
As for the noises, it may be worth dropping the gearbox pan and looking for any metal or clutch plate bits. These are normally a tough box if maintained 👍
