Noisy new Defender

Hi to all - another "new owner" question please ...

Are all new Defenders a bit rattley? What I mean is, e.g. can you hear a slight "clunk" when the clutch engages/disengages, or rattling a bit when idling etc.?

The noises aren't hideous (e.g. squealing metal etc.) and my Defender seems to run well in general, it's just that these sounds worry me a bit (especially with all the awful things some people say about LR build quality). It's a bit hard to get an honest opinion here in Germany, as (good/fair) Dealers are as rare as... very rare things :doh:

I realise the real "guts" are beneath my feet with no soundproofing and I also grew up with Land Rovers, but then you expected them to make noises in those days

Any thoughts?

sounds like clutch bearin someone will be along soon with other advice dose it go quieter if you disengage the clutch

My 90 makes a lot of noise compared to the wifes disco, yet they share all the same parts.

Thanks - the clutch makes its clunk/clatter noise briefly when engaging/disengaging but is normally quiet otherwise. The rattling sound is only after a fair/hot journey with the clutch disengaged and in first gear (e.g. stopped at lights). Would a knackered clutch bearing have other symptoms?

Oddly enough, my exhaust rattles when warm and stationary in first with the clutch in... Duno if that could be it?

What year is it??

Aha - that may be it - I have already had to move the exhaust and cut back its mounting because it was clattering on the rear driveshaft (lowered springs) - didn't occur to me that another bit might be rattling as well - further forward?

How about the clutch - is it a bit noisy when engaging/disengaging?

take the fooker back to the dealer and grab him by the bollox (squeeze till the voice and his attention raises a good bit ) .
there is a definite clutch problem a mate works at my local stealership says he has got very adept at changing um (can do 1 in 45 mins under the allocated book time he has had so much practice )

Thanks to all for your help. I went to an "independent" Landy garage in my town (what are the odds?) today to get the Boss' advice. He worked with Rover for 30+ years but when BMW got hold of the Dealerships here they shredded them, so he can't do guarantee work any more :Cry:

Anyway, he convinced me that all the clunks and rattles were within tolerance for a commercial vehicle and that if the "hot idle rattle" went away after switching off for a few minutes it can't be that serious. I found his words strangely comforting - his workshop is like a Defender (back to the 70s) re-animation museum so I trust him more than the shiny-suited spivs in Munich...
