New noise on the disco, only ever happens from cold/overnight parked. So it's in gear, as I let the clutch out there's a low pitched whining noise until the clutch is fully released. Only happens for first few pull offs then goes once warm? Clutch related yes but it doesn't drag or grab and gear changes fine? Done 110k miles.. Any ideas?

It just sounds very plausible, thrust bearing dry or fairly dry sits over night, you start the car and put the thrust bearing into motion; it squawks fir a little while until it’s warmed up and moved what little lube it still holds. Replacement is gearbox or engine out, but noisy thrust bearing can go on for ages but obviously eventually you will need to replace it, if indeed it is that but from what you say for me it does point that way.

Very helpful thanks iron horse, much appreciated. Doesn't seem to be getting worse at the moment, makes sense to let it carry on till worsen? Any idea of cost to fix?

Cost of the bearing is just a few pounds, but as you have the engine and gearbox apart it’s worth checking your clutch for wear and replacing if necessary, as you don’t want to be back here again shortly after doing a thrust bearing. You can buy a Clutch kit which has everything you need, thrust bearing, pressure plate, and friction plate, for around £100, obviously if you do the job yourself allow yourself a couple of days to take your time, can be done in a day without any trouble. Garage charges vary it’s the labour cost that hurts, but with the right facilities they should have the job done in a day.
