I have the normal error on my 91 RR 3.9 where it has BRAKE and ABS red lights on until you go about 10mph and they go away.
The noisy little pump sound form bulkhead when I start up is the norm and used to it...

Started it up yesterday but was not listening as was dodging around the engine bay with stuff. Put Bonnet down went out off the drive backwards as normal (ABS and Brake Light on as normal) drove off down the hill.
1/2 way down spotted lights still on !!! Thought OK I will pull over.... and thats where the trouble began as it slowed down like the Bismark in the Bath.... drove round the block and carefully dropped it back on the drive and cursed for 5mins or so !

Now tried it with the key turn but no noisy bulkhead motor whizzing/whirring noise. Told to pump the brake with key out so as to empty the system.

Did that and pump fired up on next start and stayed on made some higher pitched and lower pitched noises and stopped after about 1min.
Tried it again next day and it was on for 5 mins before stopping.

Appears to be the ABS pump with little braided cable on top and a stamp panel of NTC 6889 I think.

No sure where to start other than whipping the whole ABS pump off and finding a NEW one at god knows what cost.

Up to then I was loving the RR since getting it back in August first time its let me down :(

The lights staying on is not an error....the ABS system goes through a self check, part of which is to monitor the ABS sensors as the wheels rotate at a certain speed....hence why they don't go out until you reach a certain speed, this is perfectly normal....

Chrisfrain....the Classics fitted with ABS and Traction Control have accumulators....and I would concur, sounds like the Accumulator has gone....

You can get accumulator vessels, and if you are to change this.....please follow the instructions TO THE LETTER as an acculator by its name, accumulates hydraulic pressure at considerable figures, so please do be careful when working on it.....

OK thanks for this... I can't see anything like the P38 Black cylinder looking accumulator anywhere on the ABS... it does have a valve with a rubber cover on it which spits out a small amount of fluid if you loosend it off slightly. I will see what I can find out and maybe take a pic or 2 to help.

As per the attached....

Picture 1 is the Hydraulic Booster Pump and I have circled the Accumulator...
Picture 2 is the Accumulator itself....

Hope they help....

Its with my Rangey specialist friend... He is trying to source an ABS pump (RTC 6889) I think... with no joy. Whole thing makes a loud whine noise for 5 mins with ABS and brake lights remainining on then it will go off along with the light. Then it will fire up every few mins but the lights never come back on. If we can't source a pump then it may be bye bye to ABS and hello non ABS system. OR just put it up for Sale with this 1 and only issue.

Progress...... After a week of searching we found an ABS pump in very very good nick of a 93 LSE i believe. Anyway quick connect up last night and noise gone brakes back and ABS light / brake light go out nice and quickly. £120 for the unit. So just the washer pump to change, swap battery & extend the earth cable (as too short) and get that damn Thermostat out and we are set for BMW extractathon 2011 :)

abs light will only go out once your doing 8mph or more, forwards or backwards.

That's interesting and helpful - one less thing to worry about! Thanks.

The pump runs? so the pump works. Sounds like the problem is what controls the pump.

Check the ABS ECU for a blink code - could be an iffy earth. Clean and check all the connectors, clean and check all the ABS earth points.

Could be the pressure switch and/or accumulator but before you do all of that, try bleeding the system. When was the brake fluid last changed?

All done.... Get it back Sunday morning... :)
ABS pump fitted and brakes are far better now. Also managed to get the Thermostat bolts out and pretty corroded in there all bolts housing etc... properly cleaned up NEW thermostat in place. NEW Washer Jet Pump fitted.

Last one to look in to is the slightly swervy steering, my friend wants to swap out the steering box after Christmas then fingers crossed might have a month without grief.

ABS light now goes out without moving... the Brake light follow when car moves.
Pump is so quiet compared the old one. The change of Thermostat has now got the engine temp gauge up to about 1/2 way AND we now have nice hot air coming through in the cabin :) :)

Happy Days and thanks to all who advised on this.

That's not right is it, you need to check that out, its meant to be on until its finished calibrating, then will turn off itself, and that takes driving it at about 6mph or 8mph I think

opps sorry you have a RRC
