Just noticed I have no brake lights fuse is ok can't see that both bulbs blew at the same time but do they share an earth if so where is it ?.also brake light switch abs 4 pin type would this be two circuits open with pedal up and two close when pedal is pressed down?.

Discounting the wiring, the brake light circuit is very simple. There's the fuse on the live side of the circuit, the switch is next before the power is fed to the bulbs. So no brake lights is fuse, switch or bulbs, providing the wiring and grounds are ok.;)

Each lamp has it's own earth point not common so quite unlikely to be earth issue, if none of the 3 brake lamps is working and the fuse is OK then the switch is the first suspect

Yes

So why is that then when only the last D1 model year had that feature.
I have no ideea i just know that it's shown in all the 300Tdi diagrams i've seen back to '95 and it's shown in all the workshop manuals how to change the bulb in the repairs section

I expect the high level stop light circuit In the diagrams was added also for non UK spec discos in 1995, American/ Japanese markets and others maybe.
So one diagram fits all much like RAVE manual for the D1 I’ve seen what ever the engine fitted. But in the UK that lamp wasn’t fitted till the 98MY D1 arrived.

Anyway........get a new switch they're only a few quid before you rewire the whole car.
