Hi guys, I'm learning at last after my last post, read up on past articles, Wiltshire Landyman was right there's all sorts of info in here! Anyway decided to put on 33 12.50r15 on 8 spokes. Originally thought of Kumho KL 71 but Carpy raves about Baja Claws, what do you guys reckon between the two?(used for road/greenlaning/pay and play eventually)

Baja Claws,

Not my kinda tyre Khumos yea people rate them alot I don't think theyre all that.

First Question:

Whats the car for Road % and offroad %?

What terrain are you likley to cross? Mud, clay, chalk sand etc

My personal choice of normal tyre is a mitchelin XL Reason not bad off road (by far not the best but suitable for greenlanes and most places). Offroad tyres I have some seriously almost open centred tyres but not quite.

You need to look into what the offroad tyre is designed to do i.e dig down until somthing solid/more solid to gain grip.

Wide vs skinny as above wide tyres tend to clog before biting down but have the advantage/disadvantage of spreading your weight over a larger contact patch good sometimes bad in others.

Insa turbo special tracks are not bad remoulds they have been out long enough now to be tested and they are a fine 90% offroad 10 onroad tyre.

In my opinion people buy KL71s because they look good. The one's I tried were like ice skates on mud (I suppose that makes them mud skates.) They're utter ****e.
Baja claws are better off road but nothing compares to insa special tracks for value for money and ability.

Why I choose Mitchelin XCL/ XL pattern.

Well they are Mitchelin afterall a Quality tyre! Second these are very tall for their size mud biased tyre. Most other same sized tyres come nowhere near the same height.

On this note be wary of 33 inch 35 inch 36 and 37 inch tyres. Have a measure before you spend your cash because quite often the TRUE size is very different from the stated size. I have seen 33's come up at best 31 inch and 37 out at 35 inch. Baja Claws well I've only seen a couple of vehicles running these and the motors wer not LR's and had silly wide tyres that were useless on the lifted hylux they looked hidious and they didn't dig down they just clogged up. Not seen any for a few years now so maybe they have changed but they seem to be holding onto their reputation from the states as do Micky T's.

Baja Claws are quite close tread. Recip (now bust) Recip 3D's would be a better choice far cheaper Baja's seem to have alot less open area's inbetween the lugs and less square edged sidewall lugs.

bajas are a great tyre

they offer great grip in the muddy stuff (not special track levels but still bloody good) and yet they are quite good on road. not too loud, doesnt lose too much of its handling, and the mpg doesnt drop too badly

biggest downside is width, not great in the tightest of rutted lanes

i think they are great, only need to ask booger which tyre gets you further. about 18 months back his 90 on kumhos was struggling and getting stuck where my 110 was going through with ease

speak to booger bout em, he has seen them in action. and redwings, who said something like "cant remember the amount of times you got recovered by carpy, he looked like a bendy bus 110" about a trip with beaker.

to conclude - kumhos are ok. they are not in my opinion as good as a bf mud terrain, but their road characteristics are quite good.

bajas are great. they have downsides, but if you can splash out on them its worth it. they are a very good product, they wear well in road conditions, dont behave too badly on road for an aggressive tyre, they look the dogs bollocks, and they are admirable offroad - not sensational but not a million miles off from the special tack style tyre

recip 3d's all the way! Tires with teeth nice tall narrow tyre. Failing that simex copies insa's or the noo ones that are 33 inch skinny as can't best performance vs price

if you need road manners that last for ever BF All terrainand put up with the fact that your gonna get stuck more easily than those on other tyres. Compromise what do you really need from your tyre?

I run mitchelin XL's road/sand/mud great all rounder,

when the going gets tough then its Verdestein V pattern for those times you Need more bite Not Greenlanes!

I run 33 x 12.5 r 15 kumhos and am very pleased with them, especially their road manners. I havn't noticed them really struggling off road but havn't done many P&P days since fitting them. The cooper stt things can be bought in the 33" size, as can the new bfg mud if that gives you a few more options. Heard good things about them baja claws too:D

I run 265/75 r16 Insa turbo special tracks and im very happy with it...

had it on my disco and now on the 90, never had major problems with them, go through everything... the only times I've got stuck is when Im trying to cross something deep and have to push thick mud/water with the front of the land rover...

other than that, very happy, they grip and dig everywhere...

You ain't trying!

Well.... in that case you guys have to come to the plains one day.

We've had this discussion before where I said I drove through a little play area (known as the fishpond to one of the members) without even engaging lows or difflock..

I have nothing to prove, so im not bragging, but I like the tyres and they havent let me down

skinny tyres are for girls

buy the biggest and best ya can in the first place as you will only see a landrover with bigger tyres on than yours and you will wish ya went bigger

i have 36/12.50/16 simex on
when theese are up for renewal i will be looking for some 38" boggers/super swampers
