Because not all surfaces are the same, like dry sand for example, it is not compactable, so a narrow tyre will just move the sand out of the way and dig itself into a hole, whereas a wider tyre with a lower pressure will sit on top of the sand rather than just digging big holes into it. The same principle applies to soft, powdery snow, which is why ski's and snow shoes work better than boots.so why do people lower tyre pressures to give a greater footprint?![]()
