so why do people lower tyre pressures to give a greater footprint?
Because not all surfaces are the same, like dry sand for example, it is not compactable, so a narrow tyre will just move the sand out of the way and dig itself into a hole, whereas a wider tyre with a lower pressure will sit on top of the sand rather than just digging big holes into it. The same principle applies to soft, powdery snow, which is why ski's and snow shoes work better than boots.

like i said its a very boring debate that has no definative answer as there is no one tyre that suits all..
tyre choice is a personal thing

Thing is, the surface area difference of a boot vs a ski is huge in percentage terms. The difference of a 7.50 vs 12.50 wide tyre actually is minimal.

Oh and why on slippery mud do people lower tyres pressure down? A classic case of where a narrow tyre should "bite" through.

along with suspension lifts,engine modifications,exhaust modifications,exterior modifications,air lockers,axle breathers,the list goes on,not really a valid argument that is it:doh:
if you have to modify it so heavily then maybe you brought the wrong tool for the job? Most modifications have some sort of detrimental effect on other aspects of driving, eg lifts equal more body roll, tire sizes affecting turning circle etc. there must be an optimum tire size, people who say wider is better-well when do you stop? A set of contach tires?2 foot wide tires?I suspect the tires on most LR vehicles (what ever size they are) are the most suitable (or as near as damn it) size tire for that model. This of course oesnt include road biased tires from Khans or people like that. They are plain stupid.

Unfortunately I have seen it myself too.

+1

You dont have to go to many Trials before you spot an experienced driver in a tidy old Series quietly getting across the exact same terrain where many a wheel spinnin' , diff snappin' cock in an over-equipped vehicle is making a right meal of it. Sure if you are doing a mud run or posing at the Drive Thru then get some 36" Super Swampers, but for realistic UK off roading/ greenlaning/ trials etc then you can't go far wrong with something like a set of 235/85 Mud Terrains.

Whatever float's you boat tho....

But that's hardly conclusive evidence that every modified Land Rover is driven by an idiot, while every standard one is driven by an expert. As implied by the earlier poster.

If you ask pikey nicely he may decide to show you a video to demonstrate this.;)

the reason a landrover of any model is modified is to improve it for the task in hand

yes a standard landrover is great for going to the shops, and for laneing
but when you get into the realms of p+p,winch challenges, punch challenges etc,you modify to to suit the task you want it to do

S'right.......Its not like anyone is going to be stupid enough to do things like lifts and big boots just cause it looks good is it?

Do I detect a note of sarcasm ? Its obvious when they are just loaded with money and just want a 4x4 with all the gear - there's not a scratch, dent, or sign of mud anywhere. These types never have narrow tyres do they?
