Ok, so no-one saw me sneak into here to ask for help so thats ok.........................

Right, problem is as follows, Er Indoors was out in the Freelander '02 TD4, when the fuel light came on. Ok so there should still be plenty of fuel in the tank and was only going 15 miles or so.

Arrived without problems and parked on a very slight downhill slope. Came out later and the car refused to start, turned over but wouldn't go. Assuming the low fuel level may have something to do with the problem, and also that the under bonnet fuel pump sounded like it was pushing a lot of air through, we put approx 10 litres of fuel into the car.

Still refused to start and the under bonnet pump still sounds like it is full of air and wont bleed through. With the battery starting to fail, I had to resort to calling the AA, oh god the shame

An agent came out and came to the conclusion that the 'in tank'? fuel pump was not working and delivering fuel to the pump under the bonnet. The car has now been recovered home.

Can anyone help prove if the pump(s) are working correctly, what and where do i need to disconnect pipes etc. If these symptoms don't sound like pump problems, what can I check, do, hit with hammer, burn etc to sort this out.

Need to get this sorted quick as Er Indoors is now on about nickin the Rangie til its sorted, arrgggghhhhh :doh:

All ideas, thoughts, suggestions greatfully recieved.

Outlet of intank pump is connected to the inlet of underbonnet pump, bottom connection, so you could disconnect there and see if you have any flow with ignition on.

Ok, here's an update.

Having spoken with Ratty, he suggested a number of options. Upon banging the bottom of the tank, I could hear the pump 'try' to run but it sounded very slow and noisy before stopping again.

At this point I stripped the whole thing out of the tank and began to take it apart. I found that with the bottom cover removed,, the intake filter was choked with thick brown slime for want of a better description. I wonder if this has been causing the pump to work harder than it should leading to failure.

Having managed to strip the unit a little further, I applied power directly to the motor connections but it refuses to run (assuming it needs 12Vdc).

So now it seems I need a new intank pump. I have looked on flea bay, and fell off my chair at the price. Can anyone recommend a supplier of new, reconditioned or known good second hand units at reasonable cost

Have you tried 'chairs R us'?.......Oh.....you mean a fuel pump.:D

I've bought a couple of bits from CWS. They are generally overpriced. I did get my mach 5's from them at a bargain price though. Might be worth ringing em before you drive over there. If they want stoopid money for a secondhand unit with 30 days warranty, you may be better off biting the bullet and opting for a new pump.

In-tank pumps are notoriously unreliable and no guaranteed way to tell if a used one is any good. Wifey types tend to get seriously miffed at breaking down. Cheapest new pump would be my choice.
