Hi Guys,

I see this kind of issue has been discussed before but still can't find a solution.

Background:

Car has been driving just fine apart from fuel gauge fault so reading empty all the time.

Pulled up at Exeter services on Friday, returned to vehicle, started but then immediately cut out. Now it just turns over and no ignition whatsoever.

AA came out, tried everything. OBD returned invalid signal from fuel pump. Voltage tested across fuel pump (under seat) and seemed ok.

Checked fuel level in tank, was not empty but added about a gallon more just to be sure.

Manually sucked fuel through system using retriever syringe, seemed to be air in the system. Tried again, still not starting.

Gave the pump a few thumps while cranking. No joy.

Checked it wasn't immobiliser. AA guy still had no idea. Towed to local garage.

Its been at my local garage for 2 days, they have no idea either and cannot get a fault reading at all now.

Any ideas what to try next?

(PS apologies for any inaccuracies, not my Landy. Please do ask for any clarification.)

Thanks in advance!

J

I'd be putting more fuel in it for starters. If it's drawn in air, then there's not enough fuel in the tank. Also if the fuel level gauge isn't working, then how do you know how much is in there? If you don't know how much fuel is in the tank, then the ECM doesn't know either. It possible it could enter an engine shutdown routine, to prevent air getting into the system and damage the HP pump.

The invalid signal from the pump could be related to the gauge issue, but generally the AA and RAC are clueless about these vehicles. They're always blaming the pump in the tank, but it's purpose isn't to send fuel to the engine, just one side of the tank to the other.

A dedicated LR code reader is needed to get the full 6 digit code, but most generic readers simply give a 4 digit code, which is of little use.

I agree with John, more fuel and also do you know when the fuel filter was last changed, if your car is in a garage and they have the information you have given us and common sense has not kicked in to add more fuel and purge the fuel line then it's in the wrong garage.

If the fuel filter is changed make sure they use the correct one, not a cheap nasty filter.

Being a garage they may have another tool to purge the fuel through.
