Chaps, forgive a numpty question: why use RRS suspension components - are they better than the D3 originals?

the rrs use a tougher bush in there suspension, it’s just the rear upper wishbones there used on a D3

the other bushes used on a d3 are lemforder, normally buy the arms with the bushes already fitted

So are 106 rated tyres only good for Range Rover sports? Didn’t think there were be much weight difference

yes, unfortunately a lot have been caught out fitting tyres and wheels from sports and then finding out they not rated for the D3

here u go ref the rims, would be a shame selling the rims

https://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/Rims/Alloys_for_the_Discovery_3

then the tyres suitable

https://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/Tyres_suitable_for_the_Discovery_3

As at Jan 2009, all Discovery 3 factory fit and dealer fit wheels (17, 18 & 19") have been rated at 940kg per rim. While it is physically possible to fit wheels from the Range Rover Sport and some later FFRR wheels, it should be noted that the rims are rated for a lower weight.

FFRR - 925kg

RRS - 900kg

Fitment of the FFRR or RRS rims may therefore have an impact on your insurance. If in doubt, always check with your insurer. To date there have been no incidents reported on DISCO3.CO.UK of either FFRR or RRS wheels failing, nor have there been any reports of insurers questioning the fitment of these wheels.

Trouble is I paid less for these wheels and tyres than for a new set of tyres on their own.
Can’t afford to buy new tyres on top

ah nuts, i feel aweful posting the thread now , just assumed u was going to drop a new set of tyres on them

know plenty of tyres and rims get sold on the D3 forum, wonder if u can exchange them with someone

i better keep a low profile, lol

Thanks Gary. The stiffer bushes for better handling or longevity? Or both?

Nightmare! :( really sorry to read this - particularly after all the effort in collecting them! On a positive note, you can use the rims, they’ll look superb and the tyres can be purchased later. You may even be able to sell on the original rubber :)

hi

both, because there originally designed for the rrs , so having the sport suspension the bushes are harder

because the D3 weighs more than the RRS having the harder bushes they last longer

from reading a lot from other forums the D3 do like eating bushes and brake pads for breakfast

rear uppers and front lowers then need 4 x wheel alignment done after

will also be replacing my rear upper wishbones in the spring , something i’m not looking forward to as it sometimes involves using an angle grinder and cutting the wishbones in half

but in all fairness adore the D3 and wouldn’t have it any other way and don’t mind the extra maintenance req

plus 1 ref the tyres , i also feel really bad, but hopefully things going pear shaped has been avoided

Cool :)

The search for the next project is on hold, but it will be discovery-shaped! Could be D1, 2 or 3! Or if my wife has her way, a 4. The kids want a 5, but I’d hate to take one off road and risk scratching the paint in such a new car! Lol

i’m with u on the D5 , wouldn’t go any where near a green lane, lol

i’ve learnt a lot from having the D3 and at least u was able to quickly look round mine, diagnostic reader is a must

D4 u MUST have warrenty as there’s been reports of these snapping crankshafts

i would have bought a D2 as my first discovery but alas couldn’t find one without chassis issues, know there are sound chassis there , haven’t read one report yet of a D3 req the chassis welding , chassis on mine is solid and not one small bit of rust

from reading i think is body issues with a D1 , D 2 chassis

D3 , eats bushes and brake pads, compressor , belts and oil pump to be changed 105,000 miles or 7 x years , can drain a battery in a heartbeat , another reason i fitted a split charge system

have u had a test drive yet of a D2/ D3 , think at least then u can make u mind up, cough i mean swmbo will decide, lol

if u get a D3 u will get good at electronics and in all fairness the components are just bigger than the hippo , need a bit more looking after, comparing them to my hippo , motorway speed in the D3 are a lot quieter , smoother , tons of room and from a personal point of view best landy i’ve had so far

MPG , around town 18-20 on a run 30

So a RRS lighter than a D3, well my quick scan of both vehicles kerb weights is RRC 2471 Kg and D3 2461 Kg.
With the the tyre specification regarding the weight is the D3, to use old terminology an estate car, plus it has the facility to carry two extra passengers, something the the RRS doesn't have.

All very much in the same in my case RR and a D1 different shape but a very similar vehicle but with the disco's tyre have an increased weight limit as it's a 7 seven seater.

Hopefully the Scorpion tyres will be over the speed spec required for the D3 which is something at least, that if they are from a petrol engined RRS :)

Thanks mate. I reckon I’ll go for a D2 and get familiar with my welder. An opportunity to learn new skills! Lol ;)

Apologies for taking this thread off on a tangent!

Ordered new brakes today, went for the updated drilled and grooved versions in the end as no plans on going off road this year and at only £20 extra I wanted to see what they are like.
Give it a year and if they are sh1t then will replace with OEM spec.

Still gotta get rear upper arms ordered and fitted alone with full wheel alignment done before the new wheels go on.
Just means I now need to find an extra £800 odd for replacement tyres which is a ****er.
Either that or buy some Disco 5 20’s with correct tyre rating, bolt them on or get the tyres swapped.

Also been having a think this weekend plus with driving it this morning I think I might put my Discovery 1 up for sale.
Only been used one this year for a laning day and I’m not sure I enjoy off roading as much as I used too plus a lot of my friends have track cars and I’m really keen to give that a go.

I enjoy track days and green laning - they're very different disciplines, and each huge fun in their own way. Of course, this does mean I have a "couple" of cars parked out on the road... LOL ;)

For a two bed I have got an unusually large driveway so parking for 5-6 cars is doable lol.

The missus orange focus st is at the back (she has three fords)

My worry is I struggle looking after two cars as it is.
Plus next year I did think about chucking some AT tyres on the 19’s then with a snorkel the D3 with be more than up to green laning and much better for traveling to wales to go on a laning trip for example.
Not to mention the running costs each year for an m3 aren’t cheap, nor is buying one.
