Hi all. Well thought it was time to make a thread about another LR addition to the fleet.
Quick back story, went green landing with friends in and around thetford for the day and my friend calls me to say he is going to sell his Discovery to fund his wedding.
After telling me the price as soon as we were finished with the lanes we headed up to Norfolk to have a look.
And well we drove back to Essex with two Discovery’s lol.

And here she is, a TDV6 HSE with a pretty generous spec.
Filthy at the moment as it went straight into work car duties involving country lanes.
Friend of mine owns a valeting company and owes me a favour so full detail coming at the end of the month.

Had the same owner for around 11 years before part ex’d at the LR dealer in Norfolk where my friend works as a mechanic.
He bought the car and kept it for 6 months and in that time it did require a alternator after leaving him stranded.
New genuine alternator was fitted a long with a full service and the cam belt plus fuel belts changed.
So happy I shouldn’t need to worry for a while.

Got plenty of toys including terrain response, DVD player, fridge, 19’s, HD tow bar, Sat Nav, heated leather interior with memory seats, xenons and air suspension.

Lasted about two weeks before I began playing lol.
Most the original bulbs looked awful and weren’t exactly bright so got some led’s.

Annoyingly the ones for the DVD player are different so will need to do a bit more research to find replacements for them.

Still need to do footwell, sun visors and mirror drop lights but getting there.

Then got a bit carried away on eBay.

Wind deflectors, new front and rear badges, headlight vinyl kit and custom puddle lights.
Which will be getting fitted as the car is being valeted.

Also ordering a new battery as pretty sure the alternator dying as caused it some issues and it looks pretty old tbh.

Then if I can stretch to it a IID Bluetooth tool. @gstuart has made it clear they are worth their weight in gold so will soon have one.

Then other small jobs faults include drivers heated seat doesn’t work. Dash lights come on but no warmth. Passenger works though.

Parking sensors don’t work.
Again, light comes on on dash. Often a broken wire at the back so bumper will be coming off soon to investigate.

One rear suspension arm needs changing. Other have all been done but one was left because it wasn’t an advisory

Eventually maybe either a D4 external conversion or possibly look at is as the new green laner and D1 can be a more dedicated off roader for pay and play sites.

Anyway that’s it for now, will update when I do more :)

Chris

great write up and looks nice

did u forget to replace the 2 x boot reading light bulbs, , lol

dash lights, have u turned them up full with the adjuster

parking sensors, just the ign on , into reverse , then put ur ear to each one and u should hear them clicking

suspension arm, replace as a pair, rear upper or front lower needs 4 x wheel alignment done after

which arm is it plse , if it the rear upper , it’s best to replace the brake pipe and hoses at the same time , there’s 6 x of them

hope that helps a little and indeed th Gap iid bt will soon pay for itself

Cheers Gary glad you approve :)

Ha ha yes I did  gonna do that Saturday with any luck.

Yes have had them up full, think they are working just me expecting them to be brighter than they actually are.

Will give that a try and hopefully narrow doan the parking fault.

It is a rear upper arm that needs doing. Are they the ones you can replace the RR sport ones?
Thanks for the tip regarding brake lines.

plus don’t forget you’ve got the posh model, lol

indeed , as it’s the rear uppers it’s best to fit the complete RRs sport arms, replace as a pair , there’s 4 x brake hoses and 2 x brake pipes

to get them off u sometimes need an air gun or angle grinder through the complete wishbone arm,

as a side note , i’ve also got to do my rear uppers , will do them in the spring when it warms up

bolts are M16 x 200mm long , but all the new bolts etc should come with the new arms

i did get some seat covers for mine, mainly because if the dogs

also enclosed a pic of my dashboard with the lights on, may i ask have u checked all ur earth connections plse

the stalks are from a D4

always happy to help u where i can

Yer found the footwell lights, bulbs and not lenses are there but not plugged in to anything o_O
Will have to search under the dash for the plugs.

Ok cool, I’ll add RRS arms to the list and a pair. As the rubber hoses can be done I’m tempted to go for braided ones when I change the fluid.
Could finally test out my easy bleed kit lol.

I have an electric impact gun but be tempted to make use of my mates ramp and air tools.
Might come up and give you a hand, see what needs doing ha ha.

Yer looking at that photo my dash lights are that bright when driving it’s just when sitting on idle the dim and pulse.

Deffo gonna get some D4 stalks at some point. Look so much nicer.
Also my steering wheel is very warn. Apparently can’t fit a Range Rover heated steering wheel with paddle shift. Would love that.

Did the parking sensor test last night. All four front sensors are clicking however only the inner two rear sensors are clicking.
So looks like the fault lies with the two rear outer sensors.
Now need to get the bumper off to investigate further. Not sure if to get the bumper off and hope it’s a wiring problem that I can fix, or buy a couple of sensors now so I can fit them while the bumper is off and see if that sorts it.

I’m other news more leds.
Sunvisors, reverse lights and resistors for the front and rear indicators I already have.

Then while on Disco3 owners club browsing the forum I noticed a lot of people mentioning about someone called Rusty doing good quality Sat Nav upgrades.
Googled “Rusty Sat Nav” and found his website and turns out he does a 2017 map for the Disco 3 which also happened to be on offer that day.
£25 was sent and 24 hours later I had this:

A267F85B-A419-493D-B095-50D358D90A7F.jpeg

Chucked it in and no issues so now have a much newer Nav system :)

Went up to Norfolk for the weekend to visit friends. The same ones who sold me the disco.

All lights still pulseing from time to time plus had very sluggish gearbox for about half an hour. No power pulling away until about 2.5k rpm then shot off as normal.
Plus on the a11 after dinner the red and yellow parking warning lights came on and handbrake warning message on dash.

Started it up this morning and no warning lights or messages and pulls away fine again.
Ran a voltmeter over the battery and getting 15v at idle.
My friend (LR mechanic) is gonna ask on of the other tech’s at work about the possibility that the new alternator is overcharging which could explain the random electrical issues the car is getting.

So finished early yesterday so headed over to my mates garage to see what the battery was doing.
Chucked the tester on it and results are that the battery is pretty much tip top, Snap on load test came up top marks.
So more and more pointing to the alternator possibly overcharging.
Last thing will be to check the main earths to make sure none are lose.

Quiet day again today so took the chance to get out the wind and rain in the warehouse and sort a few more light upgrades

First up, puddle lights.

hi mate

looks good, would u be so kind to take some pics of the footwell lights plse , so i can see it in position ,assume the wire will already be there and just the light assembly is missing

also , where u got the reversing light bulbs plse , as they would indeed be better when reversing onto my drive

mot tester won’t be able to see them hidden behind the lens

many thks

meant to say , ur warning light can be a few things , indeed need it plugging in

that’s what i’ve suspected ref ur alternator

plse let us know how u get on

Hi mate.

Yes will get a photo for you tonight.

In the panel I dropped down to access the wire the light fitting is molded into the plastic tray.
You can just see where the plastic curves up to accept the bulb unit behind my finger.

736FB7B0-F3C9-4BAC-B7D0-D8B6B654EF6E.jpeg

Weirdly the wire was already there and the bulb holder, surround and bulb were all fitted where they should be both sides but not plugged in.

Spotted what I believe could be an aftermarket wire under the dash so maybe the trims were removed at some point and they forgot to reattach the bulb wires.

Really like them puddle lamps!

Don't suppose you have a link for them reversing LEDs do you?

I have small bars but will need to move them when I put the spare wheel on the back and think they'd be good enough in the light clusters for now.

Powerful uk do some D3 outline ones which are very cool but £40 plus postage wheeeas these came from eBay for £12. They are growing on me.

Yes mate, link in my post above yours.

Watching this with great interest as you've done sterling work on your D1, I can only imagine this will be in a similar vain.

Thanks very much mate. Unfortunately once the led’s are done most the other stuff I want is expensive so that might be it for a while lol.
Thanks for the positive feedback on the van too. Off road day in a couple of weeks so let’s see what I can break.

many thks, on reading the looms it looks like the wire is there regardless of model

see the complete lights are £4 each , that would be great if ur able to get a pic plse

thks again

Got the reverse bulbs from Advanced Factors

https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/382-rw382led-ring-premium-382-p21w-white-leds-pair-98076-p.asp

Got the indicator versions from eBay as they we cheaper.

Yes I’m wondering if the alternator is causing the problem. Group buy on gap tool hasn’t happened yet so looks like I be paying a local indi to scan it and find out what’s wrong.

Ha ha ha yes those lights would be nice.

nice one , assume they are error free canbus , hope so at that price, lol

there’s something i believe ref the indicator bulbs and the relay , read also concerning capacitor , but i think i already know about that

if it is the alternator if i may say really need to get that replaced asap , as if that starts spiking in volts will destroy ur battery and also cause untold damage

aplogises i’m gassing again aren’t i ,

indeed those blue lights would help with trafffic, lol

island 4x4 ref the iid is £420 inc vat

Yer I’d expect the wiring to be there on all models.
Cheap enough then, will get one tonight if I’m home.

Not cheap are they lol, yes no warning light issues.

Yes fitting the led side indicator bulbs would cause the car to think a bulb is out due to low voltage. Need to fit resistors in the circuit which I have also purchased.

Yes I am tempted to order a Denzo one from advanced factors instead of waiting for my mate to sort out a replacement from LR.
Should be going to the indi tomorrow to plug in and try and figure out what’s going on so will see what they say about it.

That’s alright mate, your very knowledgable on these old tanks so no complaints here.

Ha ha no excuse for being late.

Cheapest I’ve found so far is £415 from Duckworth Land Rover via eBay
