MPG Front Prop Removal

Evening Lads..... Just had a really stupid thought and wondered if anyone had tried it. To remove the front prop and run their Disco 2 as RWD only. Just wondered if it made any difference to their mpg.

My old series 3 had freewheeling front hubs fitted and it made a canny difference on mpg when they were in freewheeel mode and not drive mode.

The only problems I can see is my dash is going to light up like blackpool illuminations with abs/traction control faults.

Any views on my silly thoughts.

If I was worried about mpg I wouldn't have bought a 4.0 v8....... or tow a 26ft caravan with it..

I was just wondering what the difference would be on 2wd. I was reading an article on the new ford kuga 4x4 version with regards to its amazing fuel economy which was quite impressive but when you took into consideration it ran 2wd 90% of the time its mpg figures cannot be used as a comparison.I checked the kuga owners site to see if there were any issues with regards to fuel economy and there were a few owners who tow large caravans similar to mine and they were reporting mpg's of around the 24mpg with the caravan on the back.

well for one thing if yours has diff lock it'll be **** power wise and as a second point if you don't have diff lock give it a go

I wouldnt bother for many reasons, 1) you will have to remove it, and if you need 4x4 mode you have to lay on ground and refit
2) insurance wont be valid if you crashed
3) as you said all dash will light up
4) probably need computer to reset all the lights every time you wanna put prop back on

for the sake of saving a small amount of mpg i wouldn't bother, for all the potential problems

on a series, is 2wd, the freewheelers remove the drag from the undriven drive train.
removing the prop, to me, would make no difference, or even increase consumption, as the front drive train would still be causing drag, axles, diff etc.
the only way to improve it would be remove driveshafts etc as well, bit OTT really, you might as well get that micra...

he cant do that on a disco 2 unless it has diff lock

anyway he said he wasn't bothered about the mpg so don't see why he's asking this, series has a different centre anyway, its not a diff its just a locking gear set kind of thing

wouldnt effect abs t/c or any other light apart from difflock light or not even that if you fitted a free wheeling hub kit diff kit ,but for the previous reasons i wouldnt bother

Hi there Dave, you don't say but I'm guessing this is for your DII 4.0? Here's a few thoughts:

1. Yours is a 2002 so make sure you have a cdl even if it doesn't have the selecting lever it might still have the diff in the tranny box. If you don't have this and you remove a prop, you'll get NO DRIVE.

2. If you put all the engine power through one diff you risk breaking it;

3. As your vehicle doesn't have freewheeling front hubs, even if you remove the front prop the front diff will still be turning so you won't save anything.

To summarise, it won't achieve what you want but you could wreck a diff in the process.

i recon you may save about 1-3 miles tops with careful driving, as Dave said even with a prop removed the front wheels still spin the diff up the only thing that wont turn is the transfer box between the axle and box. You have removed a bit off spinning steel so prob save a tad bit
