Have just purchased a v6 (2001) Freelander but failed to notice the ticking coming from the rear right hand corner of the engine (top), It rises and falls with the engine revs. Any ideas?

Sounds like viz valves or viz valve motors. Stealers normally change the complete inlet manifold at huge cost. The one from the Rover 75 is the same, but cheaper. Sometimes yu can just change the motors. They clog up with the oil mist from the breathers. There is a mod to fit an oil catchment tank. details on the mg-rover.org forum.

Thanks, still not really any the wiser though. Last engine I ever worked on was about 15 years ago. Would it be the inlet manifold then?

the viz valves are variable inlet valves which sit inside the inlet manifold and, so i believe, alter the airflow within the manifold depending on load etc. They are driven by two motors controlled by a control unit (ECU?). the inlet manifold has a feed from an oil breather. this oil clogs up the manifold and motors and yhen the sytem stops working or the motors burn out.

I still have two motors which acme orf my KV6 if that is wot yu need.
