L322 Doesn't sound right?

Hi,

Back again with another issue (I think). My mates always say they can hear my car before they see it, so I opened the door earlier with the engine running and I know what they mean. There is a sort of ticking coming from the engine bay, I've got a feeling it's the pulleys but I wondered if any one has any ideas? And also any potential fixed?

I'm also having an issue that may be unrelated, but when I start the car up, it's getting more common that the power steering doesn't engage. I have to turn the engine off and on a few times for it to then kick in. If I put slight pressure on the steering wheel and start the engine, I feel it engage for a split second, then it disengages again. A few starts and stops and then it engages properly. Maybe a belt related to the above?

It's running fine apart from the above, got me through some pretty deep water from Sheffield to Manchester last week, it's just the above issues I'd like to sort. Or maybe that's just how a 2004 TD6 RR sounds?

They are noisy old beasts, when you are inside you are insulated from the noise. My son always says he can hear my Rangey from way down the road when I pick him up. They are particularly noisy after about 20 minutes of running for some reason, but tend to 'quieten down' a bit from then on. Using super plus diesel also seems to reduce the engine noise.

Got to imagine the 2 are related. Do the belts look ok?
I played the video before reading and thought belt/pulley noise

+1, I'd the the belt off and check the pulleys, then run the engine with the belt off to rule out timing components

Just played the video, Hmmmm sounds as if the pulleys need looking at, perhaps the 'soaking' didn't help? Maybe give them a healthy dose of WD40, or as my Dad would have, run a bit of candle wax along the belts just to see if the noise changes, if not it sounds as if there might be a bearing issue exasipated by the water ingress.

Thanks all for the replies, I can't help but link the two issues too. I'll try and get the fan out next week (that looks a fun job! ) and what I can find. Didn't want to do that and then the more experienced users on here tell me "it's nothing to do with that, it's ......."

From what I can see the belts look solid, but are nothing like new ones.
